Related: About this forumI just heard another new word coined by the sports announcers.
"intentionality"
That joins "physicality" on my list of non-words.

(17,165 posts)announcers say that kid needs to get his head in the game. I mean wtf do they think the kid is doing? Thinking about his term paper? What he will watch on Netflex?
I consider most sportscasters to be the most annoying people ever.

(23,820 posts)I find it clumsy and irritating.
As I commented in a different thread, nothing wrong with influential.

(50,506 posts)Don't care for our local sports news caster either. They do spots on local high school players with their hype about what they are doing and their opponents. Local sports get a lot of time for their segment than I think is warranted. And results in a 5 minute overrun of the half hour.

(9,042 posts)refer to length when they are primarily talking about height.
ProfessorGAC
(64,427 posts)In basketball, length has more to do with wingspan.
Of course, taller people have longer wingspans, but some in the NBA are exceptional.
Scottie Pippen was 6'8", but had a wingspan of over 7'1".
Giannis is 6'11", but his wingspan is 7'5".
Luca Doncic, by contrast, has a wingspan only an inch more than his height.
So, Luca is tall, but not long. Giannis is both!
So, it actually does make sense because they're talking about 2 different things.
rsdsharp
(9,042 posts)clearly referencing height when they use it. In any case reach makes more sense to me when talking about wingspan.
ProfessorGAC
(64,427 posts)And, why reach doesn't work for me is because it's a boxing term that's really measuring how far in front of the body the hand can get.
That's why I'm ok with length as a measure of lateral coverage
But, I honestly have never heard an announcer confuse length & height. Every time I've heard it used, it was obvious they were talking about the side to side coverage, particularly as a defender.
"Long" guys make finding passing lanes tough!
