Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;Where there is hatred, let me sow love;Where there is injury, pardon;Where there is error, truth;Where there is doubt, faith;Where there is despair, hope;Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seekTo be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

This has always been one of my favorite reminders of what I as a Christian am called to do and be by Christ. Although it was almost certainly not written by its namesake, it is beautiful and powerful, Bishop Tutu called it an intregal part of his daily devotion .

Where there is bigotry, let there be equality; Where there are child rapists, let there be swift and unflinching justice.

I don't preach a social gospel; I preach the Gospel, period. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christis concerned for the whole person. When people were hungry, Jesus didn't say, "Now is that political or social?" He said, "I feed you." Because the good news to a hungry person is bread.

in grade school. One reason I still consider myself Catholic. Despite all its faults and short comings, Catholicism is the primary molder of my liberalism.

Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:3-16

# Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

# Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

# Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

# Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

# Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

# Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

# Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

# Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

# Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

# Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

¶Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Yes . The beatitudes are Christ's message as best as summarized in any one passage.
I put Matthew 25 in the same category

GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)35 I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you took me into your home. 36 I needed clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you took care of me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’37 “Then the people who have God’s approval will reply to him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you as a stranger and take you into our homes or see you in need of clothes and give you something to wear? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’40 “The king will answer them, ‘I can guarantee this truth: Whatever you did for one of my brothers or sisters, no matter how unimportantthey seemed,

at least I/we try for most of these. Much of this is currently scoffed at as Socialism???? When really, it's mostly humanitarian.
