Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumI wouldn't mind (so much), except I don't think everyone is there voluntarily
as you can see a few here and there who are just standing and not taking part --
A video of U.S. Marines singing, dancing and worshiping God at Camp Pendleton in California
"There's no God like Jehovah! ... Hooah"
(HUA means: "Heard, understood, and acknowledged"
Some of the lyrics include:
"These are the days of Elijah
Declaring the word of the Lord, yeah
And these are the days of Your servant, Moses
Righteousness being restored
"These are the days of great trials
Of famine and darkness and sword
Still we are the voice in the desert crying
Prepare ye the way of the Lord!"

(6,604 posts)This was nauseating to watch.
These are the people who guard this country. Why are they subjected to this sort of indoctrination? I admit that many of them may already be so inclined, but why are my tax dollars being used to support this bullshit?
Also, "under god," "so help me god," and "in god we trust" my atheist ass.
I'm sick of this.

(50,566 posts)I mean, he's gotta tally up not just which team's fans have more people praying for their team to win, but how hard someone is praying. Like, if they're just sort of thinking: "God, let the Broncos win," well, frankly, big deal. But if they clasp their hands together and close their reeeeal eyes tight and address him as "Lord," then God takes that effort into consideration and that person can count for the equivalent of two of the more half-assed semi-praying fans.

(17,505 posts)...... how many even know who Elijah is or his story..... full of magic tricks and friendly ravens....
(I confess the only reason I know the story (not the name tho') is because of Mendelssohn)

(9,356 posts)...I can guarantee you they are not all attending voluntarily. And this kind of crap really infuriates me.
"Forced worship" is pretty common and here's one way it worked when I was in the Marines, about 150 years ago:
1. Call goes out for volunteers to attend a Prayer Breakfast. NOBODY wanted to go to these things, except a few of the religiously insane. You had to get up early, put on a dress uniform, and mingle with a bunch of civilian Bible-thumpers. And usually a local politician or two, almost always Repubs.
2. When not enough people volunteered, they got volunteered by some anonymous asshole clerk in the Personnel office.
3. My SRB (Service Record Book = personnel record) listed NO PREF for religion, which was also stamped on my dogtags.
4. I seemed to always get volunteered for these shindigs, and so did some of my friends who were also NO PREF on religion.
5. So maybe it's just my own crackpot conspiracy theory. But I'm convinced that some Personnel clerk had a list of NO PREF people. And that person thought it would do us heathens good to have a little early-morning Jebusing along with our powdered eggs and Shit-On-A-Shingle.
