Sanders Counters Clintons Debate Challenge With His Own
January 28th

"Bernie Sanders sees Hillary Clintons challenge, and is raising the stakes in their race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
A day after Clinton, the Democratic front-runner, urged Sanders to participate in a proposed, unsanctioned debate next week, the Vermont senator, her closest rival, fired back with a call for more debates.
.....Clintons call for more debate opportunities is relatively new, and comes as the race in Iowa has appreciably tightened and as Sanders passed her in New Hampshire polling.
....."From the beginning of this campaign Sen. Sanders has called for more debates. Secretary Clinton has not, Weaver said in a statement. Now she is asking to change the rules to schedule a debate next week that is not sanctioned by the DNC. Why is that? The answer is obvious. The dynamics of the race have changed and Sen. Sanders has significant momentum.

(9,086 posts)I'm sure there are tons of people who would love a chance to debate Bernie Sanders on a stage right now and would attract a lot of interest.
Dr. Jill Stein from the Green Party would do it for sure. Maybe some prominent Republicans like Rand Paul or even John Kasich.
Actually this wouldn't be the worst thing. At least it would be interesting and we would probably get a more honest debate on the issues from any of those people than we would get from Clinton.

(13,326 posts)Something is telling me that this time it will be televised, emerging from (hopefully) a win in WI.

(231 posts)A moderate R such as Kasich is actually very close on many issues to HRC.
A Sanders/Trump debate would be a huge ratings winner..another poster already mentioned that idea a few days back.

(1,681 posts)He probably wouldn't do a debate with Bernie before the general. He wants to run against Hillary and Bernie would destroy him with the entire nation watching and that would pretty much be checkmate for both the primary and the general right there.

(1,019 posts)Shouldn't this stop all the efforts by Sanders supporters to pretend it was supposed to be NY this whole time? Rather than after Sanders decided to try to "make a play" for the state?
There are two other primaries in April, it's perfectly legitimate that any of the three could be the location or deadline for the April debate.

(21,210 posts)"MILWAUKEE U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday welcomed Hillary Clintons agreement to debate him in New York before the states April 19 primary election.
Lets do it, Sanders said on CNN.
After her campaign opposed a New York debate for over a month, Clinton told reporters at a campaign stop in La Crosse, Wisconsin, that she was open to the idea of debating Sanders in Brooklyn.
The Sanders campaign hailed the development as a victory for Democratic voters everywhere and for New York voters in particular.
The Clinton campaigns earlier position was that the April debate agreed upon by both campaigns should be held after the New York primary. In recent days, one Clinton operative suggested the debate might not happen at all if Sanders did not change his tone.
The Sanders campaign has consistently pushed for a debate in New York to be held prior to the April 19 primary election."]/b]
