House Republicans Shut Off Cameras After Democrats Start Sit-In For Gun Control

by Kira Lerner Jun 22, 2016 12:17 pm

Members of the House hold a sit-in on Wednesday.

Led by civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Democratic members of Congress literally sat on the House floor on Monday to demand action on gun control. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) responded by ordering the cameras off and abruptly ending the session.

“We have lost hundreds of thousands of innocent people to gun violence,” Lewis said on the House floor during Wednesday’s morning session. Dozens of Democratic members of Congress stood beside him, before they all took a seat on the floor.

“Tiny little children. Babies, students, and teachers. Mothers and fathers. Sisters and brothers. Daughters and sons. Friends and neighbors,” Lewis said. “And what has this body done?”

Ryan, the leader of the Republican majority in the House, responded by ordering the House break for lunch, shutting off the cameras and effectively making the session closed to the press.

The session is scheduled to continue at noon, but Ryan has the power to “suspend the business of the House for a short time.”

This post will be updated as the sit-in continues.

turned off. After all, why would they want to show their opposition taking a meaningful stand? But that's okay. WE know that the Dems are doing this, despite no cameras being allowed.

Wonder if that means someone in there found the transmitter, or if it's just scheduled "obscure what's going on" time up there.

Gridlock and then he creates gridlock. Republicans dont want to govern and they want to prevent the Democrats making the moves to make corrections.

He was speaking on a hearing. I believe it may have been Bengahzi! and while Lewis was talking, the Republican chair (Issa?) had the microphones turned off and left the room.

Lewis sure seems to rub them the wrong way!!!! Good.

A presidential nominee who is on the road to being destroyed in a GE and a gun control debate that is beginning to take shape as "Republicans want people on the terrorist watch list to be able to buy guns."

It's unbelievable that they can't see how easily that will be framed this fall. There is almost no nuance to it. They believe just about anyone should be able to buy GUNZ, even suspected terrorists. The TV ads write themselves...

If you tune into CSPAN, at the moment you will see the office moderator/announcer is taking calls from the public. That is because there's been another bit of downtime in the feed. They'll be back.

NO MORE SILENCE.
