Retweet if you agree ? The sit-in by House Democrats is nothing more than a publicity stunt. #StopTheStunt

(14,270 posts)You never hear a news story about hearts and minds being changed as a result of a tweet. It strikes me more as a method to troll for snarky responses.

(18,402 posts)is because they don't want to go on record, during an election year, of opposing some common sense pieces of legislation that 80% of Americans WANT.
They know that they can defeat these bills during a vote--they outnumber us by a lot--but they don't want their Democratic opponents to be able to say: you voted to allow people on the no-fly list to buy weapons; you voted against expanded background checks of the type that would have prevented the Charleston shooter from committing his crime.
But you know what? They lose either way. Preventing a vote on these bills is equivalent to voting against them. They are on record.
It's a win-win for Democrats: not necessarily today, but in the months and years to come. (And oh yeah, hopefully in November).
This is a landmark day in this country, where our elected officials are finally standing up and saying no more. It's a day to remember. The first day of a long, hard fight. But it's a fight I finally have hope we will someday win. We shall overcome!

(1,999 posts)He knows that there are some Repugs, the few who are in actually competitive districts, who might not be quite repugnant enough to go on the record saying they support letting terrorists and criminals buy guns. And he's worried that there might be enough defections for these bills to pass. He's not going to take that risk because if he did the NRA might cut off his gravy train.

(10,857 posts)I still remember the days when a guy like Ryan could talk into a television camera and tell people what to think.
Now that the people can talk back, it's a different, gloriously different story.
