SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said on Friday that he was disappointed and dismayed that allies of Hillary Clinton beat back Democratic Party platform proposals on trade.
On the other hand, Sanders said he was pleased that the platform drafters adopted language calling for breaking up too-big-to-fail banks and enacting a modern-day Glass-Steagall Act. Sanders also said he appreciated a unanimous vote for a proposal to abolish the death penalty.
Sanders said it was inexplicable why Clinton allies on the panel at a meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, voted down proposals on trade that both Sanders and Clinton embraced as candidates. It is hard for me to understand why Secretary Clintons delegates wont stand behind Secretary Clintons positions in the partys platform, Sanders said.
The drafting committee rebuffed a proposal by Sanders allies to put the party on record saying Congress this year should not take up a trade deal known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Both Clinton and Sanders oppose bringing the measure before Congress this year for an up-or-down vote. Clinton allies nevertheless thwarted the platform proposal.
Delegates also debated a Sanders-backed proposal calling for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage. Clintons delegates and members appointed by the Democratic National Committee chair voted to strike down the proposed platform plank.
The drafting committee was considering amendments to a document that will go before the full Platform Committee when it meets next month in Orlando, Florida.
If our pro-worker amendments do not carry in St. Louis we will reintroduce them before the full platform committee in Orlando, Florida. If we do not win in Orlando we can carry them to the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Our job is to pass the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party.
Sanders was in Syracuse, New York, on Friday at a campaign appearance featuring Eric Kingson, a candidate for Congress.

Pretty sure that proposal would be out of order. It could however make a more general statement about opposition to the TPP.

(2,897 posts)in negotiations with the campaigns themselves, rejected a series of last minute amendments to revise the platform by the Bernie folks. Trade, Health Care, Israel/Palestine, and the Minimum wage were already covered by the platform. They did not magically spring up on the last day because the Bernie folks introduced these amendments. No, they were already in the document,. If the Sanders campaign can't negotiate in good faith with the Clinton campaign, every single amendment of his is doomed to fail. Of course, this was voted down.

(2,897 posts)Yes, I question the faith of these amendments and the Sanders campaign. The platform committee has been working for weeks and has included things such as a $15 minimum wage and makes no mention of the TPP, instead it acknowledges the differences of views among the party on the issue. However, on the last day, the Sanders delegates show up with amendments to amend the work that had already been done. That is not negotiating in good faith.

(25,342 posts)It's not inexplicable in the least. There are a variety of opinions on the issue, including one by the President of the United States, who is the de facto head of the Democratic Party.
The committee is not going to place the wishes of the primary runner-up ahead of the POTUS and head of the party.
"Delegates also debated a Sanders-backed proposal calling for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage. Clintons delegates and members appointed by the Democratic National Committee chair voted to strike down the proposed platform plank. "
They voted down AMENDMENTS to the plank, not the plank itself. The plank is IN the platform.

(31,700 posts)Rep. Keith Ellison, who was appointed to the committee by Sanders, proposed an amendment to the DNCs platform that would make support for a $15 per hour federal minimum wage absolutely unambiguous.
The platform originally simply stated that the Democratic Party hopes to raise and index the minimum wage, with an earlier implication that this could be $15. Ellison proposed that the language be made clearer and stronger, changed from mere support to a demand to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and index it.
The audience attending the public hearing applauded in response to Rep. Ellisons amendment.

(1,901 posts)Should we be relying on the noise made by those who don't actually know much about their brand new party or its actual platform.

(3,075 posts)Clinton is campaigning on the policy stance that she is against the TPP. So for the committee to go against her policy for the platform she will be running on in November? I think inexplicable is a good word.
TwilightZone
(25,342 posts)As for "against her policy", they neither endorsed nor rejected the TPP in the platform.

(2,897 posts)They rejected an amendment that tried to insert something else into the platform on the last day. This isn't a tacit endorsement of TPP. This is a refusal to be blindsided at the last minute for publicity.

(47,803 posts)therefore the platform should support the wish of an incoming President and Congress.

(11,197 posts)come hell or high water. Lucky for those pushing it, the general public has little knowledge of it (thanks MSM), NO power to change things (thanks establishment masters), and short political memories (can't do anything about it so why bother).
