Mayor Castro likely to win San Antonio re-election, early results show

(CNN) - The mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julián Castro, is likely to win re-election when the remaining votes from Saturday's election are tallied. With over 98% of precincts reporting, a preliminary tally showed Castro held 67% of the vote and stood 53 points ahead of his closest competitor in the six-way race.

Candidates do not declare a party affiliation, but Castro is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party. He was in the spotlight as keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention last summer, a launching pad for others' successful political careers.

But in the meantime, the mayor is poised to fulfill the career goal he set in a TIME magazine "40 Under 40" profile published in 2010 during his first term. Asked where he would be professionally in five years, Castro answered, "mayor of San Antonio."

Castro was first elected mayor in 2009 and won his 2011 election with 82%.

Julián has been our best mayor since Henry Cisneros.
Julián is very down to earth.
Joaquín was my state representative and is now my congressman.

It isn't very common for ivy league educated Hispanics to become active in politics. Usually they prefer to be doctors, attorneys etc. I'm glad they've dedicated themselves to public service.
