(Reuters) - President Barack Obama extended his lead over Republican Mitt Romney to seven percentage points because of increased support from independent voters and some optimism over the economy, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday.
Obama was backed by 49 percent of registered voters in a telephone poll conducted from May 3-7, compared to 42 percent who supported his likely rival in November's presidential election. In April, the poll showed Obama leading Romney 47 percent to 43 percent.
Obama's overall approval rating among the 1,131 adults surveyed was 50 percent, up one point from last month, while 47 percent said they disapproved of how he handles his presidency.

The poll showed a jump in the number of independent voters who approved of the way Obama is doing his job. Forty eight percent approved and 40 percent disapproved in May compared to 37 percent who approved and 57 percent who disapproved in April.

(40,416 posts)Polls are irrelevant now. The fucking campaign has barely begun. Nobody here, or anywhere, can predict what is going to happen before November.
However, we still need to know what's going on. So, although I despise these threads, I always click through to them. What some smart DUer needs to do is to do what other sites will do. Specifically, cite a reliable site that has a poll of polls.
It will be like a meta-analysis of the political jungle. That would be useful to many people here who are fighting the battles. By all means break it out state-by-state or (horrors!) district-by-district.
If anybody is doing such a thing, DU should leverage such information to help keep DUers informed.
It's not the individual polls that are important but the consensus of the polls plus how that consensus is changing.
Many of the people here who are hard working Dems would very much appreciate that information if it were posted here regularly.
Thanks.
