What's at stake: Democrat and Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar is running to represent the 31st Congressional District, which stretches from Redlands to Upland. Opposing him is Republican homeland security consultant and political strategist Paul Chabot of Rancho Cucamonga.
The 31st's incumbent, Rep. Gary Miller, R-Rancho Cucamonga, is not seeking re-election.
Why it's competitive: Democrats think the district is ripe for the taking. President Barack Obama carried the 31st two years ago, and there are more registered Democratic voters in the district than Republican voters. But projected low voter turnout and highly motivated conservative voters could hurt Aguilar.
Vice President Joe Biden will be in San Bernardino County on Saturday at a get-out-the-vote event for a local Democratic congressional candidate, underscoring the national significance of the Inland race and perhaps Democrats nervousness about the outcome.
Biden will be campaigning for Redlands Democrat Pete Aguilar, the Aguilar campaign announced Monday. Details of the visit were not available, although Aguilar spokeswoman Tatiana Winograd said the event was not a fundraiser.
The Inland Empires middle class needs a voice in Congress, and I am excited to join the vice president for an event centered around the issues at stake in this election, Aguilar, the mayor of Redlands, said in a statement.
A statement from Republican Paul Chabot, Aguilars opponent, called Bidens visit shocking last-minute desperation.

(15,512 posts)Or something similar. Wish I'd bought one. I voted for Aguilar a week ago, thought he'd be a shoe-in, but apparently it's a squeaker. The retiring guy is a winger from way back so I guess they've got a nice little enclave carved out. Anyway it looks like Big Dog is coming out this way too:
Dems' dynamic duo: Clinton joins Biden
Oct. 28, 2014 Updated: 10:51 p.m.
Democrats are sending another big name to Southern California to help Inland congressional candidates, with former President Bill Clinton scheduled to visit Oxnard on Wednesday for a get-out-the-vote rally.
Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, and Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, a Democrat running for an open San Bernardino County seat, are two of the three candidates to be touted by Clinton at the 9 a.m. rally at Oxnard College. The other is Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, who represents Oxnard and is in a tight race for re-election.
Clinton will address the importance of voting for advocates of the middle class like Brownley, Ruiz and Aguilar, read an Aguilar campaign media advisory.
Clintons visit comes as Vice President Joe Biden plans to attend a rally for Aguilar on Saturday in San Bernardino County. Details have yet to be released.

Bill Clinton, center, campaigns for Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, left, and Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar on Wednesday at Oxnard College. Ruiz is running to keep his 36th Congressional District seat, and Aguilar is seeking to represent the 31st District.
Oxnard is ~120 miles west of Redlands and even further from Palm Desert, so I dunno how they wound up in Oxnard, but I'm going to try to catch Joe if he makes it out here on Saturday, if I can. It's going to be a busy day and it won't be easy getting through security but here's hoping I get to shake hands with the next president of the United States!
maybe!

(15,512 posts)The rally was at Colton HS yesterday at noon:
Among Aguilars supporters who spoke at Saturdays rally were Rialto Mayor Deborah Robertson, Colton Mayor Sarah Zamora, and Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown, D-San Bernardino. They touted Aguilars platform of building a stronger middle class and making a college education more affordable to everyone.
Biden called Aguilar a son of America who understands what its like to work hard and, struggle to get through school. Biden said Aguilar understands that every single solitary child out there deserves the same chance he (Aguilar) had, and that the American people are tired of standing still.
Do not let this man lose. We need him, Biden told the standing-room-only audience. Get out the vote!

(15,512 posts)Democrat Pete Aguilar led Republican Paul Chabot late Tuesday night in the race for a San Bernardino County congressional seat that was the focus of national attention.
Elsewhere, Rep. Raul Ruiz was ahead in his re-election bid for a Riverside County seat. Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, led Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert, for the right to represent a district that includes Hemet, the Pass, San Jacinto and the Coachella Valley.
(snip)
This years election was a bellwether of Democratic influence in the Inland Empire. If Ruiz and Aguilar win, its a sign that the one-time Republican stronghold is more competitive.
Aguilar, who is mayor of Redlands, and Chabot, a homeland security consultant from Rancho Cucamonga, ran for the 31st Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Gary Miller, R-Rancho Cucamonga.
