Related: About this forumBernie Sanders' Plan for Free College Could End Racial Disparities in Higher Ed
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont socialist and 2016 presidential candidate, has one-upped the White House with a plan that should make college studentsand their tuition-paying parentsstand up and cheer. If his long-shot plan becomes reality, it could help the U.S. compete in the global economy and lay the first cornerstone to bridge the wealth divide between whites and African Americans.
Sanders on Tuesday introduced the College for All Act, a bill that would eliminate tuition at public four-year colleges and universities. Hed pay part of the $750 billion, 10-year price tag with a new tax on Wall Street, siphoning off a small percentage of profits made through stock, bond, and financial derivative trades.
It is a national disgrace that hundreds of thousands of young Americans today do not go to college, not because they are unqualified, but because they cannot afford it, Sanders, who is running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, said in a statement introducing the bill. Other countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, offer free tuition, he said, and the U.S. must take a bold step to avoid falling further behind those nations in developing a 21st-century workforce.
We have got to make sure that every qualified American in this country who wants to go to college can go to collegeregardless of income, he said.

It would favor the brightest and most talented instead of the richest and most privileged.

It's hard to say something would totally "end racial disparities", but it would certainly help.

"BERNIE SANDERS ISSUES BILL TO MAKE 4 YEAR COLLEGES TUITION FREE"
USA Today, College, May 19, 2015
By Michael Schramm and Ethan Stoetzer
Senator Sanders has officially introduced a bill that would eliminate undergraduate tuition. Titled, the "College for All Act", the bill would eliminate the $70 billion dollar tuition costs at all 4-year public colleges and universities.
>Snip Bloomberg recently reported Sanders commenting on the necessity of the bill. "We live in a highly competitive global economy and, if our economy is to be strong we need the best educated work force in the world.
That will not happen if, every year, hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college, and if millions more leave school deeply in dept."
>Snip The bill plans to cover these costs by initiating a Robin Hood Tax on Wall Street. A .5% speculation fee will be charged on investment houses, hedge funds and other stock trades. Additionally, a .1% fee will be charged on bonds, and a .005% fee will be charged on derivatives.

was a RW slam, but still liked it. Decided what the heck and used it on a another post today about 12:30 noon. Saw 2 others picked it up right after. So I'm good with it- esp.with the official Robin Hood Tax News now. *I think it's mashed up from the Russell Crowe Ridley Scott 'Robin Hood' film from about 5 years ago.
