(101,730 posts)I've never had reason to believe he was not a supporter of women's rights and equality. It is the other aspects of his mayoral stint that has given New Yorkers pause and me too as a result.

(37,648 posts)I know who he is and that he has an Af. American wife. That's about all I know about him. He's a mayor of a big city in an area of the country I (and most others) don't live in, so I don't follow what he does.
I got to know more about Bloomberg since he was more high profile, I think, was known nationally before he was Mayor, and he was Mayor a long time.
I knew Koch because he was nationally known. He'd give national interviews. I think there was a 60 minutes story on him.
But DeBlasio must be low key.

(5,508 posts)Her actual quote says he is the only male among her top 4.
The article states that he is the only male she would vote for President in 2020.
Those are very, VERY different things.
Best I can tell, that is some very bad journalism. Unless the author had context that they did not include, they extrapolated and stated a very different meaning to Steinem's statement.

(4,558 posts)Our news media is a core pillar of this republic, but these kinds of articles where the headliner says something that doesn't really support the details in the article (sometimes outright contradicts) is what's losing media credibility, and giving the bullshit spewn by Cheetolini credential legs.

(2,725 posts)Sounds like she has a real problem with all our other male candidates. Id have to wonder why, as I think we have many good male and female candidates

(5,508 posts)She has every right to put three women in her top four. Frankly, I have two in my top four and I am a male.
I just think the mis-statement by the author makes it sound like she wouldn't vote for any male outside of the top four. That is not what she said.
The question is if Biden (or other male) wins the primary, will she vote for him in the General. I don't see anything in her statement that says she wouldn't.

(5,508 posts)But it was quoting this article from The Hill
https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/445742-gloria-steinem-says-de-blasio-is-her-only-male-choice-for-president
Specifically, the offending statement from the article was this...
Feminist activist Gloria Steinem says New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) is "the only male human being" for whom she would vote for president in 2020.
I had a feeling my comment would cause confusion after the initial OP was edited to remove the reference.

(37,648 posts)Not too many people vote on women's issues, though, I think (although they talk about it a lot). Steinem is pretty hard nosed when it comes to women's issues.
