Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIf I had it MY WAY, every person in the LOWEST part of the polls would be in the KIDS Debate
I thought last nights debate was a travesty. The LOWEST people in the polls interrupted during the whole debate.
Destroying the speech of the people who were supposed to be answering. ALL of the Candidates are fine people but the 1% folks don't have a chance in heck.
I think last nights debate, in my opinion was NOT free speech ... it was the destruction of speech.
If I had it MY way, ALL of these Candidates would be relegated to what was called "The Kids Table" Debates :
Andrew Yang
Marianne Williamson
Kirsten Guillibrand
Eric Swalwell
Tim RyanWayne Messam
John Hickenlooper
Tulsi Gabbard
John Deaney
Bill De Blasio
Steve Bullock
Michael Bennet

(38,958 posts)Position, I believe that we need as many ideas expressed as possible. That said I believe these so called debates are a poor forum for such. I believe that more town hall formats would be a better choice.

(4,358 posts)That's what democracy should be all about - not reinforcing the advantage of the front-runners by giving them disproportionate amounts of air time.
We should be talking about ideas like universal basic income and also issues for the industrial midwest and rural areas which some of the "1%" candidates are bringing.
They just needed more forceful moderation. Cut the mics for people who interrupt or go over time and take it out of their time for directed questions. Give everyone 1-2 minutes at the beginning or spread across the debate so they aren't so antsy to get their stump speeches out.
I thought Marianne Williamson was the only one who obviously didn't have the credentials to be up there. Everyone else was bringing interesting and informed ideas.
Next debate(s) should be limited to top 15, debate after that limited to 10, etc.

(12,344 posts)and any appearance of not giving everyone a chance. I think they achieved their objective. Unfortunately the 2nd debate won't be an improvement, but the 3rd debate will probably have no more than 8 people, and all the top people together.

(581 posts)Because why bother running if your own party leadership in charge are not taking you serious. Mixing it up is good because lesser names and unheard voices can share time with the big guns.
It was good that a congressman polling at 1% had the chance to take on a former Vice President. The congressman is not going to win but he can precipitate the discussion down a different path. It was good a tech executive got to share an idea no one else has just so it is in the public consciousness and can be debated on merits.

(506 posts)I think your opinion is probably born of impatience instead. Dont sweat it. There's still a full year left in the campaign. More exposure of all candidates views is hurting no one. There's plenty of time for the thinning out the field and that procedure is in progress.
Bear in mind that at this point in the 2015 Rep primaries Trump was polling at 1%. The current low pollers among dems shouldn't be given a lesser opportunity than Twump got at this stage. They're a great bunch, not one deplorable among them.

(17,138 posts)I get in trouble too often because I'm impatient. I see myself as not being really judgemental but I have sadness at what happened in 2016.
I should just delete this thread entirely.
