Democratic Primaries

After five months mired in the day-to-day grind of a struggling presidential campaign, the El Paso massacre shook something loose in Beto ORourke.
Two days after the shooting, which was carried out by a white supremacist who was motivated by what he called an Hispanic invasion, ORourke was in his hometown surrounded by a sea of reporters. Someone asked him how President Donald Trump should respond; ORourke was having none of it.
Hes been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. Members of the press, what the fuck? ORourke implored. Its these questions that you know the answers to. I mean, connect the dots about what [Trumps] been doing in this country. Hes not tolerating racism; hes promoting racism. Hes not tolerating violence; hes inciting racism and violence in this country.
It was these sorts of unfiltered, from-the-gut responses that animated his 2018 Senate campaign and made him a political folk hero in Texas and across the country. It was also the sort of thing that seemed to be far less common as ORourke tried to figure out how to be a top-tier presidential contender.

(320 posts)I do not think "what the fuck" got him any votes AND, since he came out as saying that to be clear, people will be required to sell back their assault rifles (paraphrasing him, slightly), he is unelectable. I'm not the enemy. I would be pleased to see those stupid weapons out of the hands of the stupid people who apparently need them to salve their little ego problems. I am also pragmatic. The way to remove those weapons is to get elected and get a Democratic Senate elected. Then, pass a law like Clinton got done but make it permanent, without any sunset. Then go from there.

(81,086 posts)Buttigieg will not be the Democratic nominee.
(Incidentally, since when is a gun control candidate unelectable? His position was well known, and he won more votes than any Democrat in Texas history.)

(4,558 posts)I agree with the OP, and first response.
Were he to be our nominee, the strength he brings is making Texas into a battleground state, one that he could very well win since Texas has this almost freakish type of state level nationalism.. Running him on that angle of "Texan" vs "New Yorker" could very well get him across that finish line with Texas 38 electoral votes in the Democratic Party column. His synergy could have also helped us net a +1 in the Senate from Texas.
Running the assault weapons ban/background checks could have been mitigated, but the position of the mandatory buy-back.. It sucks, but that ad run in Texas in the GE season will almost definitely put Texas 38 electoral votes out of reach now.
That wouldn't affect my support one bit, I'm quite behind him on that position, but that's the reality of the Texas electorate.

(3,256 posts)He is carefully carving out separate issues from Biden and not getting into the fray while maintaining a solid progressive presence.
