Question: Have rival presidential candidates ever become running mates after the primaries?
I honestly don't know and I haven't had any success researching it. Has a presidential candidate who lost the nomination in the primaries ever become the winner's vice presidential nominee? If not, why not?

5. Reagan-bush. Even after bush trashed Reagan's "voodoo economics"
Picking the runner-up as veep is often a good strategic move to reunite the party after a contentious primary.

11. Obama - Biden
Biden ultimately dropped out of the race on January 3, 2008, after coming in fifth place and capturing less than 1% of the vote in the Iowa caucus. Seven months after the conclusion of his campaign, Biden was selected to be Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.

12. Yup.
It happens pretty often. It's more usual to pick somebody else, but it happens.
