New NYT Poll: Majority Of Americans Across Political Spectrum Back WARREN'S Ultra-Millionaire Tax

'New Poll Finds Majority of Americans Across Political Spectrum Back Warren's Ultra-Millionaire Tax.' At rallies, the White House hopeful has criticized billionaires for their complaints about her plan to impose a two percent tax on wealth over $50 million. Common Dreams, Nov. 29, 2019.

New polling results released Friday find broad support for Sen. Elizabeth Warren's proposed wealth tax, with Americans across most demographic groups backing her plan to impose an annual two percent tax on wealth over $50 million.

In her primary campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, the Massachusetts Democrat has harshly criticized some of the wealthiest Americans for complaining about the tax, whose revenue she plans to use to pay for a universal childcare program, student debt forgiveness, and tuition-free public college.

Sixty-three percent of Americans support the wealth tax, including 77 percent of Democrats, more than half of Independent voters, and 57 percent of Republicans. *College-educated Republican men—who are more likely than people in other demographics to be affected by Warren's wealth tax—were the only group in the New York Times/SurveyMonkey poll who reported disapproval of the plan, with 41 percent opposing it.

As the Times reported, such wide support for any tax hike plan is rare; just 45 percent of Americans backed President Donald Trump's tax plan in 2017, whose benefits mainly went to corporations and the wealthy. On social media, political observers called the diverse coalition of supporters for the plan "remarkable."
...
Kurt Andersen. That 57% of Republicans approve of a 2% wealth tax on fortunes above $50 million is absolutely remarkable. And tends to confirm my hunch that economic leftism per se (as opposed to concerns about health care details) isn’t a huge 2020 Democratic problem...

*NYT, WARREN'S WEALTH TAX HAS WIDE SUPPORT, EXCEPT AMONG ONE GROUP, Nov. 29, 2019
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/29/business/economy/economy-politics-survey.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

Crowds at Warren's rallies have taken to chanting, "Two cents!" as Warren slams billionaires including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced his own presidential run last weekend...

and Clinton wanted Warren for their vice presidential running mate in 2016.

Biden was firm that she was his first choice IF he ran, and and he and Warren met to discuss it. Hillary wanted her and went so far as to take her out for a trial run on campaign, but a two-woman ticket when we'd never elected even our first woman VP was worrisome.

I doubt that's changed for Biden, at least she'd undoubtedly be seriously considered if he were to become our nominee, and Warren and Clinton have also been communicating a lot during this campaign. Both, of course, want the "Hillary vote," especially women of all demos.

Warren is a genuine asset to the Democrats; she should have maybe run some time ago.

into campaigns against medicare for all. Health insurance companies and big pharma just don't want it because they are afraid that policies that will materially increase the quality of our national healthcare, as well as ensuring universal coverage might (gasp!!!) shrink their profits.

And, as everyone knows, here in America profits are FAR more important than human life.

Executives at corporations that do a lot of business with the federal, state, and local governments are easy ones. People heavily invested in those corporations also are probably way in the black on our tax dollars. They rake in way more than they pay out.

Taxing income and capital gains is very problematic. Taxing inheritance is better but delayed.

Taxing assets of the very rich at a small rate above a high threshold is very doable and very reasonable.

Too many top democrats have had their campaigns linked to large corporations that always will defeat these proposals in the end. Democratic politicians in leadership ALLOW this kind of fairness egalitarian talk during election runs, but then if and when they hold power, are full on "third way" corporate beholden. Even if the majority of Americans support it.

That's why we need someone like Warren or Sanders to finally....finally have the grass roots supporters have a real voice.

to what it was before Reagan's election ended the New Deal era. With corrupt, wealth-serving Republicans in control of congress, his power was very limited, yet he managed that. We intended to move forward with much bigger redistributions of national wealth under Hillary.

But then 2016 happened. So, we start over and do what we have to do. Because we have to. Or else.

"We can have democracy in this country, OR we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both"

Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi quoting pre- New Deal Justice Louis Brandeis to the nation at the opening of the 116th congress.

But if we start legislating based on polls, we're going down a dark road. Sometimes you have to do things that are not popular. Sometimes you also must not do things that are.
