WASHINGTON Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, disclosed 10 years of tax returns on Monday, providing a more detailed look at his finances than what he offered when he ran for the White House in 2016.
The returns show that Mr. Sanderss earnings shot up after his first presidential bid, when he built up a vast national following. He and his wife, Jane OMeara Sanders, reported income that topped $1 million in 2016 and 2017, lifted by proceeds from his books.
The couple had an adjusted gross income of $561,293 in 2018, according to their most recent tax return. Mr. Sanders had about $393,000 in book income last year, and he and his wife reported giving nearly $19,000 to charity.
Their federal taxes came to $145,840, for an effective federal tax rate of 26 percent.

(12,626 posts)I can't imagine why this was ever an issue. But many people were very concerned. So I thought they would be relieved to know that his taxes are still in a released state this morning.

(3,259 posts)His wealth dramatically increased since he began running for President.
It good he released his taxes so we can move on. It should have never dragged on as long as it did. Others lead the way and it was something he had to do.

(91,965 posts)to high positions, who not only voted for Jill Stein, but encouraged others to do likewise, up to the night before the election, is extremely troublesome to me.
It says to me he has no problem pushing a "Bernie or Bust strategy":

Bernie or Bust Voters Create Predicament for Democrats in 2020

For a sliver of Sanders base, its Bernie or bust. They may detest President Donald Trump, but they didnt vote for Hillary Clinton and theyre not sure theyll back the Democratic nominee in 2020 if Sanders isnt on the ballot. Theyre willing do whatever it takes to push the party to adopt his ideas.
Sometimes things have to get ugly before they get better, said Melissa Mallaber, a 46-year-old social worker who attended Sanders rally in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Theres such a thing as necessary evils in life to restore the balance.
Mallaber said she cast a write-in vote for Sanders in 2016 rather than go along with a Democratic establishment choice who wouldnt take bold action on issues like health care and climate change. People had to wake up, she said. If we had another Clinton in office what would have changed?
-----------
Dunaj, 76, said at Sanders rally Saturday in Macomb County, Michigan. In other words, Trump wins, but we wouldnt let it happen again.
Dunaj said she backed Stein in 2016 and doesnt know how shed vote in 2020 if Sanders isnt the nominee.
The die-hard Sanders fans often describe politics as a binary struggle between a wealthy ruling class and ordinary workers who are being exploited, and they see centrist Democrats as part of the problem. And theyre wholly unpersuaded by the argument that they should vote for a moderate Democrat over a Republican as the lesser of two evils.
-----------
Hope Larkin-Begley, a computer programmer in Pennsylvania, came to the rally wearing a Sanders 2020 button, hat, sign and a peace-sign shirt with his name on it. She voted for Stein in 2016 and has no regrets about the outcome, saying the election of Trump ripped the veneer off the ruling class and steered the Democratic Party in the more left-wing direction of Sanders.
If Hillary had won wed be going down the same incrementalism road, she said. Its better to have a buffoon rather than a civilized smooth-talking charlatan.

(8,127 posts)15% of Hillary supporters in 2008 voted for mccain in the general election because they were so salty Obama won.. but hey, i guess we'll just pretend that never happened..

(91,965 posts)However, I am not talking about supporters of a candidate, I am talking about when the candidate themselves hires people in their campaign who voted for Jill Stein, and encouraged others to do likewise.
Clinton endorsed President Obama when he received the nomination in 2008, and not encouraged her supporters to vote for him in the general election

(9,497 posts)Were not Democrats to begin with, they were part of the never bother to vote. Well, they got engaged. They were never going to vote for Hillary to begin with. So the party didn't lose votes, the party couldn't convert those votes to the primary winner.

(14 posts)Just because a person is successful and their income grew does not mean he is not fighting for the poor & working class of America.
Bernie would be a great President. You would see major change in this country to benefit working class & poor.

(7,113 posts)Wealth doesn't prevent a politician from being effective champions for the less fortunate.
My only problem with the Bernie's recent prosperity from book sales is his surprising remark that "If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too."
That sounds very similar to the wealthy conservative GOPer mindset that "I'm wealthy because I deserve it, and you're poor because you deserve it."

(9,934 posts)Seriously.
If Bernie, with a high paid working spouse, was broke and in debt, or declared multiple bankruptcies, after years of work in the house and Senate, I would be more concerned. That might indicate financial mismanagement.
Bernie's money is of NO concern to me.
