Sad news: Elizabeth Warren's dog, Otis, has passed away

Just posted on Facebook:

One of the most fun parts of the campaign was sharing our golden retriever Otis with all of you. So I now need to share some sad news: We lost Otis. He was battling cancer, and he suddenly went downhill. Bruce and I are heartbroken, but we are grateful for seven and a half years with our big, handsome boy. He’ll always live in our hearts.

Such a wonderful doggy. All the best to Elizabeth and Bruce.

Gospel According to Mark, Chapter 17 (Joke)

A Sunday school teacher was giving her class the assignment for the next week.

"Next Sunday," she said, "we are going to talk about liars, and in preparation for our lesson I want you all to read the Seventeenth Chapter of Mark."

The following week, at the beginning of the class meeting, the teacher said, "Now then, all of you who have prepared for the lesson by reading the Seventeenth Chapter of Mark, please step to the front of the room."

About half the class rose and came forward.

"The rest of you may leave," said the teacher, "these students are the ones I want to talk to. There is no Seventeenth Chapter in the Book of Mark."

Pope's book on Jesus challenges Christmas traditions

It's Christmas, but not as you know it: a new book released this week by Pope Benedict XVI looks at the early life of Jesus -- and debunks several myths about how the Nativity unfolded.

In "Jesus of Nazareth -- The Infancy Narratives," the pope says the Christian calendar is actually based on a blunder by a sixth century monk, who Benedict says was several years off in his calculation of Jesus' birth date.

According to the pope's research, there is also no evidence in the Gospels that the cattle and other animals traditionally pictured gathered around the manger were actually present.
Pope debunks Christmas myths

He also debunks the claim that angels sang at the birth, a staple theme of Christmas carols.

LOL - Obama is not impressed!

Background: That is US Olympic gymnast McKayla Moroney. There's a picture of her from the Olympics in which she looks unimpressed about winning the gold medal. They even created a Tumbler about her: http://mckaylaisnotimpressed.tumblr.com/

Helen Milliken, former Michigan first lady, dies at 89

Source: Detroit Free Press

Among Michigan First Ladies, Helen Milliken set the modern standard. Dignified, stylish, and deferential to her husband, former Gov. William Milliken. But also outspoken, passionate and unyielding.

Mrs. Milliken, 89, passed away this morning after a long illness in the Traverse City home where the former first couple lived in retirement.

She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was receiving hospice care, her son William (Bill) Milliken, Jr. told the Associated Press.

Helen Milliken is perhaps best remembered as Michigan’s leading proponent of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The ERA, which would have banned discrimination based on sex and authorized Congress to adopt laws enforcing it, came close to passage (it was approved by Congress and 35 of the needed 38 states, including Michigan).
