Christians Call Out Hobby Lobby For Hypocrisy

The arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby proudly touts itself as a Christian company that puts people over profits. However, some staunch Christians say there's a gaping hole in that claim -- namely, China.

Products bearing "Made in China" labels are found all over the shelves at Hobby Lobby, evidence that some of its wares come from Chinese factories that have a reputation for labor rights violations and rock-bottom wages. Employees at these facilities often end up working grueling hours in prison-like conditions and never earn enough to escape poverty.

"You cannot call your business 'Christian' when arguing before the Supreme Court, and then set aside Christian values when you're placing a bulk order for cheap wind chimes," wrote Christian author and columnist Jonathan Merritt in a recent article for The Week.

Hobby Lobby remains quiet about its dealings in China. The company did not respond to requests for a list of Chinese factories it does business with, and did not provide information about what percentage of its merchandise comes from China.

College GOP chairman resigns, joining Democrats (Mississippi Federation of College Republicans)

The chairman of the Mississippi Federation of College Republicans has resigned his post and "will be changing my party affiliation to Democrat in the next few days."

Evan Alvarez resigned his post this morning, which was made public by a release sent out by MFCR with a copy of his resignation. In the letter, he says that tea party activists have too much of a voice in the party, "and because of that, the platform of the Republican Party has shifted too far to the right in my opinion." In a separate email to me, he says he has already begun talking with Democrats about joining their party.

First, here's the background:

Alvarez's resignation comes after the MFCR board decided not to remove Kolby Busby from the organization. Busby faced impeachment charges because he issues two robocalls on behalf of Chris McDaniel in the Republican Party primary and primary runoff for U.S. Senate. In the robocalls, Busby affiliated himself with MFCR, which violates the organization's policy of remaining neutral in primaries.

Woman tries to kill spider with fire; charged with arson

A 34-year-old Hutchinson woman was arrested early Friday after five Hutchinson Fire Department units were called out at 1:36 a.m. to extinguish a small fire in her half of a duplex at 121 W. Seventh Ave.

Deputy Fire Chief Doug Hanen said in a press release that firefighters found light smoke coming from the woman’s half of the duplex and some clothing smoldering just inside the doorway. They found multiple other points of origin for the fire and brought it under control within minutes, Hanen said.

Although no one was injured, and there was no damage to the structure other than light smoke damage, Ginny M. Griffith was arrested on a charge of aggravated arson because the other half of the duplex also was occupied.

A police summary of the incident said Griffith told officers that she used a cigarette lighter to set some towels on fire to kill a spider. Griffith was being held in the Reno County Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond.

Inmate smuggles drugs via her vagina

In one recent Wexford County case, drugs made it successfully through in hiding — that is, until an inmate became gravely ill, authorities say.

Stacey Lynn Youngs, 33, was booked into the Wexford County Jail June 3 on a probation violation. Shortly after, another female inmate in her cell became gravely ill and was "rushed" to the hospital. Corrections officers later learned the female inmate had overdosed on drugs, Wexford Prosecutor Anthony Badovinac said.

The woman who overdosed had been booked into the jail for long enough that officers knew — those drugs had to have come from another source.

That turned out to be Youngs' vagina, Badovinac said.

Shirtless man jumps on police cruiser, claims to be from another planet

Dash cam video shows a shirtless man jumping on the windshield of a Muskegon County Sheriff's Department cruiser.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. Sunday when a homeowner near Blue Lake and Duff roads called police about a man with a four foot metal pope checking windows and doors of her home.

When a deputy arrived, the man, who authorities identify as 20-year-old Calquan Burr of Twin Lake, charged his vehicle and leapt on the windshield.

"The officers rounds the corner and it is dark out -- he had no time to react. The guy is already running at the car. He almost had zero time to respond and there was no time to avoid him," said Lt. Shane Brown of the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department.

Salt Lake City bishop slams lawmakers for refusing to expand Medicaid

Right now an opportunity to protect the dignity and sanctity of human life in Utah is being squandered by legislators who refuse to act in a morally responsible manner.

In the name of politics, Utah Legislators continue to block tens of thousands of Utahns from access to healthcare coverage. Utah, home of phenomenal levels of volunteerism and charity, is one of four states that remain undecided about expanding Medicaid. Governor Gary Herbert has proposed a potential solution that would provide at least some of the necessary coverage, while maintaining the fiscally conservative values of the state. Despite his ongoing and productive discussions with the federal Health and Human Services administration, Utah’s Republican Legislators continue to say no to any plans that would protect human health.

Legislators claim the issue requires more study. This comes after a year of study that included paying an outside firm to research the potential costs and benefits of various expansion scenarios, convening experts of all stripes, and running simultaneous task forces – one from the executive branch and one in the legislative branch – to consider all options. The results of these multiple efforts have all been in support of expanding Medicaid in some form. Despite all of the expert advice, Republican leadership in the Legislature refuses to accept the realities, the facts, the numbers, and asks for more studies. In essence, leadership is holding its breath until it gets its way.

Legislative recalcitrance might be of little concern if there weren’t thousands of Utahns suffering in the meantime. Whatever games legislators want to play, they are doing so with people’s lives. While they push for political points, low-income Utahns continue to get sick; continue to suffer from treatable, preventable diseases that without treatment become catastrophic. In a state that proudly proclaims its pro-life beliefs, denying readily available healthcare coverage to thousands does not promote the sanctity and dignity of life. It is imperative that we as a state provide health care to our low-income working families who otherwise are unable to afford it.

Mayor throws dog poop in neighbor's yard; resigns

The mayor of a tiny Southern California community who was caught on surveillance camera flinging a bag of dog poop into a neighbor's yard has stepped down, officials said Tuesday.

Dennis Kneier, the mayor of the affluent neighborhood San Marino, resigned amid criticism as well as threats of a lawsuit and a fine, according to NBC Los Angeles.

San Marino, a town just south of Pasadena, has a population of roughly 13,000 people. In 2010, Forbes Magazine ranked the city the 63rd most expensive area in the United States.

Florida man steals underwear through ceiling, blames diet pills, marijuana, alcohol, Red Bull

Detectives have arrested a man that says he accessed his neighbor's adjoining apartment through the ceiling to steal items.

...

According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, victim Jennifer Lopez -- not the celebrity JLo -- and her son heard sounds coming from the attic in their Champion's Walk apartment last week and later noticed tools and undergarments missing from the apartment. The son also noticed neighbor Hearns on his balcony shaking dust off himself. Lopez then called the sheriff's office.

Investigators contacted Hearns and met with him Monday, where he admitted to climbing through the attic and taking whatever he could reach through the ceiling. He also admitted that he fell through his own ceiling upon returning to his apartment.

He blames the incident on diet pills, marijuana, alcohol, and Red Bull, but admits he knew what he was doing was wrong.

Man tried to throw football stuffed with drugs into prison yard

A Detroit man is facing felony charges after he allegedly tried to throw a football containing drugs, cell phones and other contraband into the yard of a state prison in Jackson on Sunday.

The throw came up short and the football landed between two fences at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility and did not land in the yard where prisoners exercise, said Trooper Toby Baker of the Michigan State Police Jackson post.

A prison officer who was in the parking lot saw the man throw the football — which contained heroin, marijuana, tobacco, three cell phones and chargers — and he was apprehended at the scene.

"After observing the passenger exit the vehicle and throw the football, our officer ran towards the vehicle and drew his Taser and told the driver to stop, which he did," said Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Man leads police on 18-MPH tractor chase

An Indiana man allegedly led police on a slow-speed, hours-long tractor chase that crossed the state line.

Monday evening in Decatur, Indiana, 20-year-old Dustin D. Clouse allegedly tried evading police who were responding to a vandalism call, WISH-TV reported.

With only a tractor as his getaway vehicle, Clouse managed to reach a whopping top speed of 18 miles per hour, police said.

Police said Clouse refused to pull over, despite driving over stop sticks which caused his tires to go flat. Clouse allegedly tried swerving into a deputy and attempted to ram multiple patrol cars, according to WANE.
