NYT: How Hillary Clinton Went Undercover to Examine Race in Education

DOTHAN, Ala. — On a humid summer day in 1972, Hillary Rodham walked into this town’s new private academy, a couple of cinder-block classrooms erected hurriedly amid fields of farmland, and pretended to be someone else.

Playing down her flat Chicago accent, she told the school’s guidance counselor that her husband had just taken a job in Dothan, that they were a churchgoing family and that they were looking for a school for their son.

The future Mrs. Clinton, then a 24-year-old law student, was working for Marian Wright Edelman, the civil rights activist and prominent advocate for children. Mrs. Edelman had sent her to Alabama to help prove that the Nixon administration was not enforcing the legal ban on granting tax-exempt status to so-called segregation academies, the estimated 200 private academies that sprang up in the South to cater to white families after a 1969 Supreme Court decision forced public schools to integrate.

Her mission was simple: Establish whether the Dothan school was discriminating based on race......

A look at Mrs. Clinton’s efforts that summer, through archives and interviews with more than 50 local officials, civil rights activists and people who knew her, reveals a summer job that was both out of character for the bookish law student and a moment of awakening.

My 20's were not so well spent.

This is a good long read. Front page, I think from reading comments.

Some of those comments are complaints about how the press just FAWNS over Hillary ALL the time.

WP: Bernie Sanders shares something with Republicans: Bashing the media

snip>Such bashing is far more common for Republicans, who have long complained about a liberal bias among journalists. This year, GOP hopefuls Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have made accusing reporters of slanted coverage a central part of their campaigns.

For Sanders, the complaints are more likely to be about the corporate giants who own news outlets. While those at his rallies lap up such critiques, experts say Sanders’s message is less likely to win over the more moderate Democrats he needs in order to catch Clinton..........

Dennis Goldford, a political science professor at Drake University, said other Democrats could see Sanders’s jabs “as a sign of weakness.”

“Typically, when you’re having trouble with your campaign, you attack the media,” Goldford said........

Goldford, the Drake professor, said Sanders bears some responsibility for drawing relatively less news coverage. The candidate often gives the same hour-long stump speech at his rallies, focused on income inequality and other issues impacting working-class voters, which provides little new material for reporters to write about.

“Look at the word ‘news,’?” Goldford said. “The press wants to know what you have for us today that’s new.”

That makes sense to me. If a candidate doesn't reach far beyond a single core message, what's to cover? It's a tough call because you want there to be a theme to the campaign, but also broaden support and coverage. I commend Hillary for the way she has run her campaign. Just as one issue is well covered and received, boom, another policy initiative is released. For instance, the Alzheimer's issue this past week. In fact, the campaign has been methodical. One week there's a big foreign policy speech, key endorsements the next, etc. She's very good at this!

Trump Campaign: What good are nukes if you're afraid to use them?

Seriously.

Appearing on Fox News on Friday, a spokesperson for Republican frontrunner Donald Trump threatened that the business mogul would be willing to use nuclear weapons if he were elected to serve as commander in chief.

“What good does it do to have a good nuclear triad if you’re afraid to use it?” campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson asked on Fox’s The O’Reilly Factor.

Pierson went on to suggest that while other Republican candidates may threaten war, Trump would actually be willing to use the the nuclear triad to fix problems around the world. “That’s where we are today,” she said. “We need to be discussing how we fix their problems, not just complaining and name-calling about who started this and who started that.”

Cummings: Unredacted Email Debunks Rehashed Conservative Conspiracy Theory

Dec 9, 2015 Press Release
WASHINGTON – Today, the Select Committee on Benghazi Ranking Member released an email in unredacted form that debunks recent rehashed allegations? from conservative news outlets about the Department of Defense's response on the night of the Benghazi attacks.

Conservative commentators have called the redacted email a “smoking gun” and claimed that it “seems to contradict testimony from former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta who in 2013 told lawmakers there was no time for an immediate response,” and that “[military assets] were awaiting sign off from the State Department and they never acted.”

However, the unredacted email confirms the previous testimony of Defense Department officials to Congress, supports the findings of previous Congressional Committees, and debunks these recent rehashed allegations.

The email in question is released in full here.

A Democratic Spokesman stated:

“This email is yet another example of how conservative conspiracy theorists use bits of information out of context to rehash baseless allegations that have been debunked time and again.”

Trump Says He'll Talk to Bill Gates About 'Closing that Internet Up'

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump just said the US should consider "closing up" the internet to curb radical extremism. Trump, a man that routinely claims everyone in charge of the US is stupid, believes that as president he could just call up Bill Gates to help him shut off the internet. Trump floated the idea at a campaign rally at the USS Yorktown in South Carolina tonight as a way to stop ISIS "jihadists" from recruiting Americans to commit acts of domestic terrorism....

"We're losing a lot of people because of the internet," Trump said. "We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people."

Like you, I'm sick of hearing about him and talking about him. I also believe he's the kind of person you have to keep an eye on.

In a televised speech last night, United States President Barack Obama mentioned that many of our greatest athletes are Muslim. This caused Donald Trump, a fascist golem made of flypaper, to be like, “What Muslims?!?!”

Charles Pierce: Uber-Liberals Are Now Likening Hillary Clinton to Dick Cheney (HRC Group)

The professional hysterics at Salon—and, Lord, some of the commentary over there these days is audible only to dogs—have been warming up the old Naderization facility in the fairly reasonable assumption that Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the Democratic nominee for president.

However, people change with time and Hillary Clinton has leaned to the right (all the way to neoconservative territory) on a number of issues, especially foreign policy. I wouldn't vote for Dick Cheney, therefore I'm not voting for Hillary Clinton.

Here with an opposing view is Mitch McConnell, Majority Leader of the United States Senate.

The Senate narrowly passed a bill Thursday that would repeal key pieces of the Affordable Care Act and strip federal funding of Planned Parenthood for one year. The bill, which only needed 51 votes to pass because it was being considered using a procedure allowing it to bypass typical Senate procedures which require 60 votes to advance a piece of legislation, passed 52 to 47. The bill is not expected to become law.

......
Let us assume, for the moment, that the president has taken leave of his senses, or is sockless drunk, and actually would sign this dead parrot. What will then occur? Right off the top, millions of women will lose not only a significant portion of their health-care, but also the uncomplicated exercise of one of their constitutional rights. As to the rest of the country, the bill kills off the federal exchanges, which help millions of other Americans get their health insurance and it 86's the subsidies that do pretty much the same thing. Millions of Americans will get tossed back into the uninsured population, meaning that they will exchange a (largely illusory) tax penalty for medical bills running anywhere from 100 bucks to a shitload of money on the economic scale.

I may be naïve, but I don't see President Hillary Rodham Clinton signing this bill, either.

Harry Reid On Gun Violence: Congress Is ‘Complicit Through Our Inaction’

Source: Huff Po

WASHINGTON -- Just as he did two months ago, after a mass shooting in Oregon, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) took angrily to the Senate floor Thursday to once again advocate for gun control legislation. He asked his colleagues to “take a long, hard look this morning, maybe in the mirror, and ask themselves, 'Where do I stand?'" after Wednesday’s mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people.

“We as the legislative body of this country do nothing. So I have a question for every member of this body: How can we live with ourselves for failing to do the things we know that will reduce gun violence?” Reid said.

“Will it get rid of all of it? Of course not. But will it reduce it? Yes. We're complicit through our inaction, and if we continue to fail to act, we'll be complicit today and every day into the future," he added. We'll keep ending up right where we are, mourning innocent victims in San Bernardino, California, or Charleston or Newtown. When the victims turn to us for help, we'll have nothing to show but empty hands and a few empty gestures. It's despicable.”
...
"Now, there was a time in my legislative career that I tried to work with the National Rifle Association. But the NRA today is a far cry from a sportsman's organization that I once supported. The NRA once called mandates for background checks reasonable," Reid said. "I'm not making this up. Now they are transformed in a quasi-militant wing of the Republican party."

Dick Cheney’s Eternal Likeness to Be Unveiled in Senate’s Halls

Source: NYT

As vice president as well as president of the Senate, Dick Cheney once asserted that he was essentially his own branch of government. Nevertheless, he will be immortalized in the Senate beginning on Thursday with a traditional marble bust in recognition of his service there.

Mr. Cheney is to attend the ceremony along with the man who made him vice president, George W. Bush, after Mr. Cheney conducted a search for the best candidate to join Mr. Bush’s ticket.

Dems are skipping it, along with Harry who bailed on him too (he was supposed to speak) -AND Leahy, who dick swore at, will be at the WH neener neener.

...So it’s historically unusual but not totally surprising that Senate Democrats are skipping a ceremony at the Capitol Visitor Center later this morning to unveil a marble bust of the former vice president.
