Weinberg became a Goldman Sachs partner in 1927 and helped run the investment trusts, including Goldman Sachs Trading Corp. He co-ran the division with Waddill Catchings, who shriveled the market value of Goldman Sachs Trading Corp. from $500 million to less than $10 million. At this point, Weinberg took over the division, and became a senior partner in 1930. He became head of the firm in 1930, saving it from bankruptcy, and held that position until his death in 1969.

Weinberg befriended Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 while working as a member of the Democratic Party’s National Campaign Finance Committee, and successfully raised more funds than any other member. Since many on Wall Street had opposed Roosevelt in the 1932 presidential election, Weinberg stood out as a prime candidate for the new president’s liaison to Wall Street. Indeed, in 1933, Roosevelt assigned Weinberg the task of organizing a group of corporate executives- called the Business Advisory and Planning Council – to serve as a bridge between the government and the private sector during the economic upheaval of the New Deal. Weinberg handpicked executives with whom he wanted to develop business relationships, and deliberately invited no other investment bankers to join the Council, putting himself in the perfect position to network. Roosevelt admired Weinberg’s work greatly, nicknaming him “The Politician” and offering him numerous federal appointments, all of which Weinberg refused.

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Weinberg played an active role in engaging America’s private sector to overcome the nation’s considerable financial, industrial, and organizational challenges. Weinberg repeatedly proclaimed, “government service is the highest form of citizenship,” and, “I’ll never take a job in government in peacetime, but I’ll take any job in time of war.” Following Weinberg’s success recruiting corporate talent for the Business Advisory and Planning Council, President Roosevelt entrusted Weinberg with an even more important mandate: forming the Industry Advisory Committee under the War Production Board’s Chairman, Donald M. Nelson.

Weinberg personally met with the CEOs of America’s top corporations and told them:

“Our nation is in grave danger. America needs an enormous number of talented executive leaders to organize a massive war production effort. The President has sent me here to get your help in identifying your very best young men. We need the smartest young stars you’ve got. And don’t even think of passing off older men or second-raters. I’m asking the same thing of every major company in the country, and I’ll be watching very closely how well your men do compared to the best young men from all the other corporation. God forbid the people you pick are less than the best because God, President Roosevelt, and I would never, ever forgive you.”

1. I was thinking this morning that the divide on the electoral left between Sanders & Clinton is determined by some key factors. Here goes:

2. While there are exceptions, overall people who have organized and won battles - John Lewis, Dolores Huerta, etc. - went with Clinton.

3. Whereas the high profile lefties with Sanders are overwhelmingly defined by a history of failed activist ventures. "Beautiful losers."

4. The latter group generally feels that their activism fails not because of anything they're doing wrong, but "the system is rigged."

5. That's always been the cop-out excuse. "I don't need to improve, or train, or change my approach because it's all rigged anyway."

6. Sanders' message of economic determinism - that all of life is about money - appeals to the loser part of the left, confirms its biases.

7. And it lets them off the hook, allows activists to take zero responsibility for going about activism in such an ineffective way.

8. This divide on the electoral left sharpens the racial divide, because organizers of color don't have the luxury of always losing.

9. Americans of color, in general, aren't duped or deluded into thinking "we are the majority already." That's plainly obvious.

10. The idea that there is some super woke majority out there waiting to lay siege to the palace is an overwhelmingly white delusion.

11. This imaginary unicorn majority, in their heads, gives them permission to think "we're not doing anything wrong, it's the system."

12. When people think that way, years of frustration and anger build into an impotent rage, and they berate instead of persuade.

13. Since berating is a behavior especially satisfying for men, the Sanders crusade grants them permission to be jerks, & call it politics.

14. It is thus the perfect cocktail for the emergence of the "Bernie Bro," who, again, is not a millennial but the aging white male activist

15. And the whole episode is only going to further reinforce their embittered worldview as the Sanders campaign now sinks into ignominy.

16. They will look back upon it and grumble to each other, "See? We were right! The system is rigged. It's not us, but THEM!"

17. That's why whenever they lose a primary they scream so loudly to invent "fraud" and "voter suppression." Things external to them.

18. They can't ever look in the mirror and say, "My god, we lost because of ME! We didn't train ourselves. We have no social skills!"

19. My central mission in the coming months will be to rescue the idealistic millennials from the "beautiful loser" left, because they're ok

20. What a shame the Sanders campaign didn't repeat the Obama model of training its troops. But to have done so would have been anathema.

21. Because training & organizing are about "agency." They teach "we win or lose based on what WE do." That's the lesson of Sanders' failure

As Hillary Clinton held the latest in a series of panels and discussions with family members of those affected by gun violence, Bernie Sanders' top personal surrogate laced into her approach Thursday.
"I just don't like to see it be politicized. I think that Secretary Clinton's gun record is a lot more spotty than Bernie's," Jane Sanders, the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, said in an interview with CNN, after the network cut away from coverage of Clinton's panel in Hartford, Connecticut, that included, among others, the daughter of the principal killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.

Nelba Marquez-Greene, whose daughter was killed at Sandy Hook in 2012, remarked before Sanders' comments that she came to the event "knowing I would be the subject of ridicule and ire, online harassment and abuse and knowing that people would make mean comments like 'Oh there goes Hillary, using those Sandy Hook families.'"

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
