A Significant Increase in Military Flights

the last two days. I live near a major Naval Air Force Base and an Air National Guard Base. Normally the War Games are scheduled for regular days and times. The last two days the activities have been constant. Literally day and night. These are large transports along with the usual jets. I've no idea what this means, if anything, just thought I'd share the observation.

So, what Senate seats do the Dems have a chance

to take from the Republicans?

I know Massachusetts and Warren/Brown. Last I checked they were in a dead heat.

McCaskill may still lose MO so that may be a loss there.

Is there anywhere else to actually gain some footing in the Senate?

I know DU has some poll wonks out there. What does it look like?

Did the Democrats miscalculate in MO?

From my understanding, this Akin character was actually running 3rd in the primaries. The McCaskill campaign poured money into the Akin campaign thinking that Akin was too bat-shit crazy to be actually be elected in the General. What if that was a miscalculation and Akin actually makes it to the Senate? The results will be that a) Democrats will most likely lose the Senate majority meaning the Republicans have both houses and b) we are stuck with this batshit crazy misogynist for at least 6 years and possibly longer.

Another point: I'm told McCaskill is highly unpopular, even among Democrats in MO. So why wouldn't the Democratic Party spend time and money bringing in a candidate who was more electable?

I'm sorry but I think this was a HUGE gamble on the part of the Democrats and, if they lose the gamble, the consequences could be dire to say the least.

Nuns group professes hope for talks, stands firm for their religious life

Source: St. Louis Beacon

The next step for the leaders’ network of most of Catholic sisters and nuns will be to to talk with the Seattle archbishop whom the Vatican appointed to oversee the group. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious ended its annual meeting in St. Louis with plans for its board to meet with Archbishop J. Peter Sartain tomorrow in "civil, respectful dialogue." Since April when the Vatican issued its mandate to reform, its board has had no official discussions with him.

“The members expectation is that open and honest dialogue may lead not only to increasing understating between the church leadership and women religious but also to creating more possibilities for the laity in particular for women to have a voice in the church.“ LCWR President Pat Farrell said in news conference Friday afternoon. She also said the organization will reconsider discussion if it gets to the point that its integrity is compromised.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith began a secretive assessment of LCWR after Catholic lay and religious theological conservatives complained that the American nuns' group held secular ideas. The Vatican reprimand called a “doctrinal assessment” said the organization had long tolerated dissent at its national assemblies and included “radical feminist” responses to the all-male priesthood and tolerance of homosexuality. It also said the group was not vocal enough in standing with the church against artificial birth control and against abortion.

“Sisters’ leaders are constantly challenged to honor a wide spectrum of opinions. We have learned a lot about creating community from diversity and about celebrating diversity. We had come to trust diverse opinions as powerful pathways to greater clarity. Our commitment to community compels us to do that, as together we seek the common good.”

The "Yes on 37" Campaign has started

This is the upcoming proposition that would require labeling of GMOs (Frankenfoods) in California.

They had a sign-up at one of our local Farmer's Markets and I'm now on their mail list. They're asking for support and volunteers.

Anyway, instead of trying to copy all the contact information, I'm just going to copy the e-mail which has several links.

Dear XXXX:

Thanks for adding your name to the growing list of people who have endorsed our campaign! Every person who stands up and says “I have the right to know what’s in my food” sends a strong message to our elected officials, the food companies, and to the people in your community.

As an endorser, we’ll keep you posted with occasional email updates as the campaign evolves, and opportunities to get involved in your area. To see the next event near you, click here. http://www.carighttoknow.org/events Attending an event is a great way to meet like-minded individuals who are volunteering for the campaign near you. If you’d like more information on volunteering, you can click here http://www.carighttoknow.org/volunteer to learn more.

The biggest thing I’d like to ask you for today is to make a donation. We know we’re going up against companies with very deep pockets and high profits. We’re not going to be able to outspend them, but by donating today http://carighttoknow.org/donate you can help keep us in the fight.

Thanks for supporting us today. For up to the minute updates, click here http://www.facebook.com/carighttoknow to like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/CARightToKnow if you’re not already.

What to do with Eggplant

I've got several growing in the garden and any day now I'm going to be inundated with them. Now, I LOVE eggplant, the espoused one, however, is not a fan. I have a great recipe for Eggplant Parmesan which he likes but even I can only eat so much of that. So, do you guys have any recipes for people who don't like eggplant but like it the way you make it?

Thanks!

Number Of Farmers Markets In U.S. Surges

FRESNO, Calif. -- As demand for locally grown fruits and vegetables has increased, so too has the number of urban farmers markets sprouting up across the nation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday that the number of direct-sales markets has increased 9.6 percent in the past year, with California and New York leading the way.

"Farmers markets are a critical ingredient to our nation's food system," USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said. "These outlets provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also to the communities looking for fresh, healthy foods."

Anyone interested in the sustainability movement might like this short article.

REAL Farmers Markets (not the resellers but the actual farmers selling directly to the public) have been such a boon to buyers who get a much greater variety of fresh produce as well as to farmers who get a far greater profit selling direct to the public.

I canned peaches last Saturday that I bought from a local farmer. Picked and canned in the same day. Today I made a peach pie out of those same peaches. Probably the best peach pie I ever had (even if I do say so myself). The point being that there is no comparison between the cardboard stuff you buy at the grocery store and something that has come to market literally hours after it's been picked.

Local News Coverage from Yesterday's Protest

Here's video/stories about yesterday's protest at Chic-fil-Hate. All 5 stations were there (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and Univision) but only ABC, CBS and FOX had video coverage. I was mistaken yesterday when I said Fox's equipment broke down right as they were beginning to film. it was actually NBC's. I went to the Univision site but I couldn't find coverage there though my Spanish sucks so it might be and I just didn't see it.

Anyway, notice the "fair and balanced" coverage by most of them.

NBC: Story only -- no video:
This report says "dozens" showed up. Bullshit! There were at least a couple hundred if not more. The picture they showed must have been at about 5:00 because by 5:30 the place was packed.

Fox:

ABC: This one REALLY screwed up by saying we were backed by Focus on the Family and other hate groups. Obviously, that was the OTHER side. There's a quick shot of me at about 2:27. I'm the short one with the tie-die t-shirt and hat.

http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/video?id=8759906

CBS: 'This one does correctly say "hundreds" showed up:

One thing I'd like to add. When you see someone referring to Fresno residents as all "pukes" and hayseeds and ignorant farmers, could you PLEASE remember we also have thousands of wonderful people like these.

Just Got Back From the "Chic-Fil-Hate" Protest

We had a really great showing, maybe 200-300 people which is pretty amazing since there was only 2 days notice. There was good representation from all age groups, both gay and straight.

Had some really great signs. Mine said: "It's not about the 1st Amendment, it's about the 14th Amendment."

All the local news stations showed up (I'm sure it was just a coincidence that the local Fox Nooz equipment magically stopped working just when they were beginning to film). Later I hope to be able to post a link to the news story and/or photos.

At 6:00 all the couples who wanted to participate lined up to go into the Chic-Fil-Hate and had a mass kiss-in. Very cool!

Needless to say there were a few assholes. Most drove by waving their Chic-Fil-Hate cups with either our local hate radio or Christian radio blaring. No matter. Everyone kept their cool and obeyed the law. And can you believe it? No cops! At least not visible.

Finally had to leave after an hour as my breathing just wasn't going to hold up much longer.

Had a great time. It's good to feel energized by something again.
