How wonderfully successful Putin has been at fucking over the UK and the US

he engineered Brexit and Dumbshit using some online trolls, some quislings (Boris Johnson, Mitch McConnell), and the thing that made both of our societies most vulnerable: Racism.

As far as I can see, the drive for both Brexit and Dumbshit were appeals to Racists. And it worked out for him in spades. While the UK drives itself into a ditch, neither able to pull off a brexit or pull out of brexit, the US is tying itself in knots trying to figure out how to rid ourselves of this moron and his accomplices.

Putin has masterfully leveraged our racism (or our fellow citizens' racism) against us, causing both large powers to shoot ourselves in the face, at extremely low cost.

I have to hand it to that little asshole, he's certainly improving Russia's place in the world by lowering ours.

Who ever would have thought that after the SC put our government up for sale in Citizens United

that it would be bought by a hostile foreign government. Whoops!

Oh well, “independent expenditures do not lead to, or create the appearance of, quid pro quo corruption.”, right Justice Kennedy?

A round up of conservative reaction to AOC

https://www.villagevoice.com/2018/07/09/ocasio-cortezs-win-has-right-wing-raising-a-new-red-scare/

For decades the Right has lazily tossed off pro-forma denunciations of socialism as inimical to our wonderful capitalist system. But after years of declining wage growth and benefits, things are changing: Polls show many people, especially younger ones, think capitalism isn’t working so well for them. And the June 26 victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the charismatic young democratic socialist who beat incumbent Joe Crowley to take the Democratic nomination for a congressional seat covering parts of Queens and the Bronx, makes socialism look like more of a winner.

Conservatives now find themselves having to make more of an effort to explain what’s so bad about bread and roses, and their rustiness is embarrassingly evident.

In last year’s state and local elections, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), to which Ocasio-Cortez belongs, saw fifteen of its members elected to local office. But Ocasio-Cortez is making a bigger splash than they did because she won a primary for a U.S. congressional seat in the nation’s biggest media market, and happens to be young, attractive, Latina, and eloquent.

This last impression conservatives labored mightily to dispute, with articles like “Socialist Ocasio-Cortez Can’t Differentiate Between Socialism, Democratic Socialism” at Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire — not only an inaccurate portrayal, but one based on the assumption that anyone not bred like an orc in a right-wing think tank would give a shit about such a difference.

Conservative politics is built on disgust

Some of you may know that I highly recommend Jonathan Haidt's book "The Righteous Mind" as a really great starting place for understanding the conservative mind, and what makes them tick and how they are different from liberals.

On of the principles that guides conservatives in their emotional reaction to the world is "purity", meaning cleanliness, wholesomeness, savoriness, acceptability. For them, disgust is an emotional reaction close to the surface, and it manifests itself frequently as their sense of purity is offended. Hence, the maniacal obsession with virginity. Hence, the drive towards "racial purity" and the contempt and disgust towards people who are in any way different - different races, different cultures, different sexuality.

And so, the conservative media have developed the conservative brand around stoking disgust that conservatives have for their fellow Americans - Gay people are gross. Trans people are gross. Brown people are gross. Drug users are gross. Hippies are gross - and Democrats are all hippies.

Meanwhile, on the other side, liberal politics is built around equality under the law and equality of opportunity for people, overcoming our fear of the different. It is a politics that urges us to get over ourselves, to not be disgusted by our fellow Americans, but rather see them as worthy of the fruits of citizenship as we are.

I am glad to see to that liberals can be disgusted by the actions, policies, and hatemongering of conservatives, if not so much for the people themselves. But we should recognize the force that is disgust in our politics, and try to use it to our advantage or to disarm it.

boy I wish Jennifer Granholm had been born in the U.S.

She's poised, quick on her feet, knows her policy, and would make a great candidate.

Roy Edroso on the latest brouhaha

On Wednesday, as Nielsen enjoyed a meal at a Mexican restaurant (chosen, I assume, as some sort of ghoulish victory ritual), she was harassed by a bunch of protestors and had to leave. Here, conservatives said, was a real outrage!

“Temporarily separating children at border: literally Auschwitz. Normalizing mob violence against political opponents, which is literally a fascist trait: totally awesome,” tweeted Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, whom I am told is some sort of intellectual, which may explain why he got this exactly backward.

“Maoist America: Screaming Leftists Force DHS Sec. Nielsen to Leave DC Restaurant,” wrote the Gateway Pundit. “PUNDITS, ACTIVISTS CELEBRATE HARASSMENT OF FEMALE DHS SECRETARY,” announced the Daily Caller. You liberals claim to support females!

“Protesters Surround DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s Home,” cried Breitbart. Wow — were they chanting “Get out of Jeh Johnson’s House“?

Some of the brethren tried racism jujitsu. When CNN’s Ana Navarro joked, “Are there no Norwegian restaurants in Washington, DC?” the Washington Examiner’s Byron York gasped, “CNN’s @ananavarro suggests Nielsen, a Florida native, should stick to her own ethnicity in choosing restaurants.” “CNN Analyst Wants Her to Eat With Only Her Race,” said Ben Marquis at Conservative Tribune. White people can’t catch a break in this country!

Then on Friday night White House spokesliar Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who distinguished herself in this mess by doing the old What About Non-Immigrant Children Huh routine, got asked to leave Virginia restaurant the Red Hen where she’d planned to dine because the owner didn’t want to serve her, and the brethren really went crazy. True, Nielsen is a cabinet secretary and extremely white, but Sanders, as the daughter of a prominent, racist GOP ex-governor, is peckerwood royalty.

It only took 20 years for one station with Fascist Propaganda to get a Fascist elected

(unless you count Darth Cheney). Fox News was launched in October of 1996.

Think about how seductive, powerful, and addictive fascist propaganda must be to create that kind of constituency in only five presidential terms. There are millions of Americans who will only believe something if it comes out of Fox.

Progressive policies are so great - built on science, empathy, and hope, instead of fear. Why can't we get equally enthusiastic media representation for effective government and policies that make all of our lives better? It seems that benefiting everyone is a strategy for being loathed or ignored by the media and most of the populace.

Just venting. I still can't believe it only took one station 20 years to bring their horrible agenda to power.
