Happy Bobby Bonilla Day!!

Bobby Bonilla Day explained: Why the Mets still pay him $1.19M today and every July 1

The calendar has turned to July 1, and that means one thing: It's time for Mets fans everywhere to wish each other a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why? On Thursday, 58-year-old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, as he has and will every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.

In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract.

However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

At the time, Mets ownership was invested in a Bernie Madoff account that promised double-digit returns, and the Mets were poised to make a significant profit if the Madoff account delivered -- but that did not work out.

TAOS, NM—Former U.S. secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld passed away Wednesday at 88 years old, sources confirmed, and is survived by 1 million fewer Iraqis. “It is with tremendous sorrow that we share the passing of an American icon, whose legacy in decades of shaping U.S. foreign policy will be felt by the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi men, women, and children who might otherwise still be alive,” read an obituary of the former U.S. congressman, White House chief of staff, and RAND Corporation chairman, adding that he also leaves behind an incalculable number of current and former prisoners who will feel his influence for the rest of their lives. “After a long and rich life, Donald leaves behind the stark absence of so many Iraqi mothers, fathers, uncles and aunts, grandparents, children, and grandchildren, as well as innumerable never-to-be-born potential descendants.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem sends 50 National Guard troops to Texas - privately funded

I just went looking around Fox News

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/south-dakota-kristi-noem-troops-texas-tackle-border-crisis

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Tuesday announced that her state is sending dozens of National Guard troops to Texas to help the Lone Star State deal with the continuing crisis at the southern border, after an appeal for help from Gov. Greg Abbott.

Noem announced that 50 South Dakota National Guard troops would be sent to Texas to secure the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Her office said the deployment will last for between 30 and 60 days, and that it will be paid for via a private donation.

South Dakota is the latest state to respond to that appeal from Arizona and Texas. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced this month that his state would send 50 law enforcement officers to help tackle the surge.

Bands with the most members ever.

The Waterboys 85
Santana 71 by my count
The Fall 43
I would have thought Chicago would be up there but I only count 31 members.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Waterboys_members
Over 85 musicians have performed live as a Waterboy.[2][3] Some have spent only a short time with the band, contributing to a single tour or album, while others have been long-term members with significant contributions. Scott has stated that "We’ve had more members I believe than any other band in rock history" and believes that the nearest challengers are Santana and The Fall.[4]

Really? COVID protocols cancel national semi-final game at College Baseball World Series

How this is happening to a team that HAS to be overly aware of precautions is dumbfounding to me.

This has the best details I could find. NC States manager says he will only talk about baseball and this was the players decision to make on vaccines.

https://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/college/vanderbilt/2021/06/26/nc-state-no-contest-vanderbilt-reactions-college-world-series/5356431001/

The NCAA announced early Saturday morning the 1 p.m. College World Series game between Vanderbilt and NC State would be ruled a no-contest due to COVID-19 protocols.

The announcement comes after Vanderbilt defeated shorthanded NC State 3-1, who played Friday with nine position players and four pitchers — all the Wolfpack had available.

According to D1Baseball.com, two NC State players, who were not vaccinated, tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Per COVID-19 protocol, the entire roster was tested and four came back positive. These four positive tests were from vaccinated individuals present in the dugout Friday.

On the other side, WFLA political reporter Evan Donovan said NC State's outcome in the College World Series was "tragically avoidable."

In all my DU years I'd never been in this forum. Very helpful

At least I don’t think I’ve been in here.

Lots of great links and articles. I’m trying to get running again but something in my back went haywire at the beginning of the year. Starting PT next week.

Nearly every new Covid-19 death is now entirely preventable, CDC director says

Related* : Sun-East, bear-woods, etc.

The dangerous Delta variant poses a risk to the United States as the country works to ease out of the Covid-19 pandemic, but experts say the nation has the tools needed to overcome the threat -- if the public takes advantage of them.

"Covid-19 vaccines are available for everyone ages 12 and up," US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said at a White House briefing Tuesday. "They are nearly 100% effective against severe disease and death -- meaning nearly every death due to Covid-19 is particularly tragic, because nearly every death, especially among adults, due to Covid-19 is at this point entirely preventable."

Those still dying from Covid-19 in the US are "overwhelmingly" unvaccinated, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN's Jake Tapper.

Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease specialist, said he does not think it's a "big deal" for the nation to fall slightly short of the July 4 target.
"You set a goal. If you reach it, great. If you don't, you keep going to try and reach it and go beyond it," he said.
