Welcome to DU, GlashFordan!

Good to have you with us! This too is unfortunately correct. Or anybody he knows could buy it for him. Acquiring a gun seems to be one of the easiest things in the world to do.

Welcome to DU, TheLion!

Glad you're here!

I think you're spot-on. And it's unfortunate too. This monster is the LAST person on the face of the earth who should be entitled to have a gun, concealed or otherwise. He's a menace. Now, sadly, unleashed and excused and absolved and validated, and walking free.

Of course she had an agenda before the trial even began.

I'd guess she came in with an already-made-up mind, and my-my-my but that abortive book deal certainly got off to a flying start in a hurry. Initial word of it came within HOURS of the jury's being excused. Don't tell me it wasn't in the works, probably with her husband or whoever, WHILE she was still sequestered. There were six jurors and a few alternates. Why was SHE the one who had the book deal straight out of the gate?

It just REEKS.

I'm calimary, and I HEARTILY approved this message!

Usually my attitude toward Texas is -

"'Don't mess with Texas' you say? Stuff it. I'm from California.

We're bigger than you.
Our population's bigger than yours.
Our Congressional delegation is bigger than yours.
Our electoral vote totals are bigger than yours.
Our Latino population is bigger than yours.
Our agriculture is bigger and better than yours.
Our natural wonders are bigger and better than yours.
Our universities are bigger and classier and more prestigious than yours.
Our economy, as a mere state, STILL ranks us in the top ten of NATIONS OF THE WORLD. Not just states.
Our overall health is better than yours.
Our beaches are better than yours.
Our surf is better than yours.
Our blondes are better than yours.
Our weather is better than yours.
Our style is better than yours.
Our cuisine is better than yours.
Our music is better than yours.
Our diversity is better than yours.
Our broadmindedness is bigger than yours, and we both like AND recognize that we're living in the 21st Century unlike so many of you.
Our collective intelligence is WAY higher than yours.
Our governor is WAY smarter than yours and the guy before him was an ass, but fuck it. He was also the fuckin' TERMINATOR.

And I could go on.

I'm from California. And I'll mess with Texas ANYTIME I DAMN WELL FEEL LIKE IT.

Seldom utter it out loud, but that's pretty much always what I'm thinking whenever some swaggering putz goes to the "Don't Mess with Texas" BS.

Hey, it was a serious question. I've seen websites in which servers have detailed all kinds of

well, let's call them "responses" to rude treatment, bullying and nasty or loutish treatment by diners, in which various of the wait staff or kitchen staff find rather distinctive ways to have their revenge. You quickly realize how important it is to be a good customer! Because they who prepare and present you with food have the ultimate power over your health and well-being. Some of the - um - "solutions" to poorly-behaved customers were utterly stomach-turning.

Welcome to DU, Boothie!

Glad you're here! Sadly, this is just one product of the deterioration of our democracy. I'd add the deliberate subversion and dismantling of the protections to the right to vote as well.

What the hell kind of "democracy" does THAT create - when the main intention is to silence certain groups of people and deny their ability to have their voices heard?

I swear - stuff goes on in America now that's condoned, and even celebrated (and cemented into law), that I have never seen before, and I just hit age 60 this year.

Well, one more person gets it.

One by one. We should be standing OUR ground, too.

I just can't believe what's going down in this country.

It's as though these accursed Stand Your Ground laws have, in effect, allowed open season to be declared, in a COMPLETELY ARBITRARY WAY, against anyone whose looks you don't like. If you think they look like nogoodniks then you're authorized to take matters into your own hands. I thought the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing was the governing principle across the board. But these laws wind up deputizing people into being their own self-anointed/self-appointed judge-jury-executioner, singlehandedly. Unilaterally. HAH - reminds me of the blight on America that the theory of the unitary executive was allowed to play out under bush/cheney. Well - Stand Your Ground laws allow you to become your very own bush/cheney, then. They've been taken WAY too far, to the point where they're now creating multiple menaces to society. Giving "rights" to loose cannons everywhere!

THAT, THERE, should be unconstitutional on its face, and swatted down like the nuisance mosquito flying around your face on a hot night. It denies due process. It denies an arbitrarily-singled-out group of people the most basic foundation of American justice - innocent until proven guilty. It is THE WORST of us. And it sure as hell brings out that WORST of us.

For those who insist that "guns aren't the problem! People are the problem," all I can offer in response is that if people are the problem, they're a BIGGER and deadlier problem when they have guns.

And for all the gunners out there and the Second Amendment apologists - I say to you - OKAY THEN. It's on YOU. GET YOUR ASSES IN GEAR AND FIX THIS PROBLEM. AND FIX IT NOW!!!! Seize the leadership this gives you and do something beneficial for ALL of society beyond just your fellow paranoiacs, for a change! Or else the rest of us will find a way to cut through your crap and your obstructionism and and your dawdling and your excuse-making and fix it for you. If you refuse to act, then we'll have to.

Sometimes, as a mom, I find myself boiling down issues like this to some very simple basics. If you can't play nice, mom has to take your toys away from you and send you to your room for awhile perhaps to think it over as to how big a snot nose or brat-child you're being, or how reprehensible your behavior is, or how utterly indefensible and irrational and nonsensical your position is. I think we've reached that point here.

Or put it this way. Aren't we all just peachy-keen happy and comfy-cozy with the idea that the manifestly irrational, incredibly screwed-up, and deeply prejudiced "Georgie" got his gun back? Feelin' safer now, America?

July 17, 2013

Amen.

They deserve as much reasoned compassion as they gave him.

Welcome to DU, Peaceplace80!

Glad you're here. Great question you ask. If she's at peace with her decision, then by all means step up into the light and show yourself. Face up to what you did. George Zimmerman won't have to. You've certainly seen to that.

About calimary

Female. Retired. Wife-Mom-Grandma. Approx. 30 years in broadcasting, at least 20 of those in news biz. Taurus. Loves chocolate - preferably without nuts or cocoanut. Animal lover. Rock-hound from pre-school age. Proud Democrat for life. Ardent environmentalist and pro-choicer. Hoping to use my skills set for the greater good. Still married to the same guy for 40+ years. Probably because he's a proud Democrat, too. Penmanship absolutely stinks, so I'm glad I'm a fast typist! I will always love Hillary and she will always be my President.
