This is indeed somewhat unclear. Hard to tell if it was metaphoric or actual. Neither would surprise me. This is PERFECT for friends or in-laws or siblings - with small children. Because for $25 you can get an adoption in their name, plus a little plush toy. Sent 'em to my nieces and nephews when they were little. Each year I'd pick a different animal and they'd get a new toy for their collections.
