Good to have you with us! I've always admired Jimmy Carter. I wish he would have won a second term, instead of that bastard reagan and all his felonious robber-baron friends. Carter has always stood tall. He's still the most moral President we've had in many decades.

I worry about the imaging of the U.S. bombing yet another Muslim country. Oh yeah, SUUUUUUUUUUUURE! THAT'LL fix it! THAT'LL make it stop. THAT'LL be a sure-fire deterrent against the use of chemical weapons.
We sure sent that message effectively in Iraq, didn't we? Remember how many times among the many musical-chairs campaign of revolving justifications for going in there - "he gassed his own people!!!!!!" What a message THAT sent. What a meaningful, effective, and long-lasting lesson THAT taught. 
And who takes over in Syria if we were to remove Assad through this? Do we even know????? It wouldn't surprise me to see instant sympathizers popping up behind him all over the Arab world with our first bomb strike. Whoever hates him now will embrace him because he'll be a symbol of opposition to the dreaded West. WHAT WILL THIS ACCOMPLISH - SERIOUSLY??? And do you think, realistically, that doing this WILL make it stop? Seriously?

She was fine with her own job outside the home, parading all over the country spreading her bile and her idiocy, getting paid for speeches and public appearances, advocating that America's women belonged at home with the kids, and dutifully popping out more every nine months.

Gee, didn't we try this once before - one of the many flimsy arguments bush2 cited for getting rid of Saddam Hussein was invariably "he gassed his own people!!!!"
Well, we sure showed him, alright, didn't we? We sent a message out there about the folly of using chemical weapons on your own people. EVERYBODY learned from that one, didn't they? NEVER saw the likes of that atrocity again, did we? Sure took care of that problem once and for all, didn't it?
I just don't think anything good, longterm OR short, will come of this if we go ahead with it. Innocents will still be killed - and probably by us and our "surgical strikes", and we sure won't get any thank-yous or be met with flowers and sweets after we do this. Even if we topple Assad, the people fighting him don't like us. Whose side do we take, and who do we arm and assist - al Qaeda or Hamas? Which pro-Western set of rebels is that, again? And we're likely gonna get stuck in deeper and deeper when it starts. And all we need to fire up the Arab world further against us, and up the ante against us, is yet another scene of the U.S. bombing another Muslim country. Yep, that's the ticket fer sure!

And, for the first time, long enough! Watterson's work always left me wanting more. A LOT more. Love the way he draws! Love his style! And his messages, too! One panel, or one Sunday funnies spread, was NEVER enough.
I'm not, either. So what we offer then is yet another image of the US bombing a Muslim country.

I'm torn - just a little bit. YES it's awful. YES the visuals are awful. But also YES the intel is inconclusive. This is NOT a slam-dunk. Didn't we learn ANYTHING from what happened a decade ago??????????????????? Does NO ONE think there won't be unintended consequences here? Does ANYONE think this will be quick and surgical, and that'll be that? That it won't linger and grow and metastasize out of control as soon as we pull the first trigger? And now soon will boots be on the ground? Hell, we can't cope with the wounded and injured veterans we've already created! Are we sure we can deal with more?
I sure do, too! She reminds me of how I felt about then-First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
Granted, I was very young and I only resonated with the "young mom who was a young President's wife, with little kids in the White House." I was only in fifth grade when JFK was assassinated. But that whole First Family really resonated with me. But that Jackie Kennedy, MAN did she ring a bell with me. My mom idolized her in particular because of her understated elegance and style and taste, but the whole Kennedy thing - the Catholic thing, the noblesse oblige thing - that went over HUGELY in our house when I was little.
I loved Rosalynn Carter for her sense of public commitment and obligation, I revered Eleanor Roosevelt (about whom I only had read and studied second-hand), I dearly loved and appreciated Betty Ford - for MANY reasons, and Hillary Rodham Clinton was the first First Lady to whom I could relate in any personal way - she was an independent professional, a working mom, and very near my age - after the dumpy imperious grandma during the bush1 years and the rich, skinny, manipulative hag in the reagan era - neither one of whom I found anything to which I could relate on a personal basis.
But Michelle Obama has it all, at least for me. The surface stuff and the deep stuff - glamour, elegance, style, class, poise, intelligence, a BIG heart - very loving and as classy as she was she still has the common touch; AND a strong commitment to be an example for good - a deep devotion to the greater good.
