Some Republicans are claiming Chris Christie isn't really one of them. Some pundits are claiming, even as scandal erupts around him, that he's a "different kind of Republican." He's more than that: He is the archetypal Republican, the incarnation of its arrogant, corporatist soul.
It's like we said a while back: Christie is "the heartless, smug, bullying embodiment" of his party. He and his staff reflect a world in which other people are nothing more than rubes to be manipulated and exploited, whether they're trying to escape the trap of long-term unemployment or Fort Lee during the morning rush hour.
The conventional wisdom says that Christie's not like other Republicans. Pundits say he's a "moderate," a "pragmatist," a counterbalance to the far-right ideology of the Tea Party Republicans. But no leading Republican is really moderate, including Christie. And at the end of the day they're all pragmatists, ready to do whatever it takes to serve their paymasters' agenda.
Democrats and liberals routinely express frustration and bafflement at Republican hypocrisy. "They claim to hate big government," they'll say, "but they want to expand the Defense Department. They say they want government out of our lives, then vote to control women's sex lives or manage a brain-dead woman's care from the nation's capital."
Well, yeah.
It's true that Republicans are hypocritical in word and deed. But while they may be false to an ideology, they're always true to their mission: to promote and serve the interests of big corporations and ultra-wealthy individuals. And when it comes to that agenda, all of them -- the Chris Christies as well as the Paul Ryans -- are as extremist as the political climate will permit. Whether the subject is taxation, "corporate personhood," or the future of the planet, there's no room for either moderation or ideology in the service of corporate goals.
That's why the party's few real ideologues...

For the first time ever, half of US Congressmen, both Democrats and Republicans, are millionaires, according to figures from a group that examines the influence of money on politics.
At least 268 of 534 lawmakers currently elected to the House of Representatives and the Senate had a net worth of $1.0 million or more in 2012, according to disclosures filed by all members of Congress.
For a few, that figure went into the hundreds of millions — and the median net worth was just over a million, at $1,008,767, according to analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics at OpenSecrets.org.
Median figures for Republicans and Democrats in the “millionaires club” are nearly equal, with Democrats edging just a bit ahead with $1.04 million compared to $1.0 million for Republicans.
But in both parties, the average has risen from a year earlier, from $990,000 for Democrats and $907,000 for Republicans. That year, some 48 percent of lawmakers were in the millionaires club.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics’ analysis, the wealthiest Congressman was Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, who made a fortune with a car alarm system he created. They calculated his net worth as averaging $464 million during 2012.
His least wealthy colleague was David Valadao, also a Republican from California, whose net worth was in the red — a negative $12.1 million — thanks to debts related to his family dairy farm.

Thousands of documents subpoenaed by an Assembly committee looking into the George Washington Bridge scandal are expected to be released this morning.
Assembly officials said the documents, including additional emails and communications from former officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, are now part of the public record and will be posted online.
Some of the emails were released on Wednesday and offered a stunning look into the exchanges between a top Port Authority executive with ties to Gov. Chris Christie, and the governor’s deputy chief of staff, who joked about causing traffic jams in Fort Lee after several local lanes of the George Washington Bridge were suddenly shut, in what critics believe was political retribution targeting the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, who did not endorse the Republican governor for re-election.
Christie, who said “the conduct in those emails is unacceptable to me,” yesterday fired the aide, Bridget Anne Kelly, and apologized for what happened, but said he had no knowledge of the operation.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Thursday presented a new theory why New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) may have wanted to close George Washington Bridge lanes -- a festering feud between the governor and Democrats over state Supreme Court nominees.
As the story stands, Christie's deputy chief of staff called for George Washington Bridge access lane closures that created a massive traffic jam in Fort Lee for four days in September -- a move that many have written off as political retribution for Democratic Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich's refusal to endorse the Republican governor's reelection.
Maddow on Thursday presented an alternate theory, saying Sokolich's endorsement "wasn't that important." Instead, she suggested the political payback was motivated by a tiff between New Jersey state Senate Democrats and the governor.
Maddow took viewers back to 2010, when Christie declined to reappoint a New Jersey Supreme Court justice, John E. Wallace Jr., for another term. The move left state Senate Democrats "absolutely outraged," Maddow explained, and they refused to confirm any Christie's nominees for Wallace's seat. "It's been a big political crisis in New Jersey," Maddow said.
By last August, Supreme Court Justice Helen Hoens, a Republican, was up for renomination. When state Senate Democrats signaled they would challenge Christie's nomination, the governor said he wouldn't renominate Hoens. "I simply could not be party to the destruction of Helen Hoens’s professional reputation," Christie said during an August press conference. "I was not going to let her loose to the animals."
"That was an angry Chris Christie," Maddow said. "So angry that he was doing something almost unprecedented in New Jersey: Yanking the tenure of a state Supreme Court justice, who he liked! That was an angry Chris Christie, furious with Senate Dems at a hastily called press conference that took place late in the day on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2013."
As Maddow pointed out, the press conference was the evening before Christie's deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, sent an email requesting "traffic problems in Fort Lee" to David Wildstein, one of Christie's top aides at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the bridge.
What's more, Fort Lee is represented by Sen. Loretta Weinberg, the state Senate Democratic leader.

“I still stand with Gov. Christie. You can hire people, you have good intentions and you think highly of these people, and people get fired every day,” said Michael Blunt, the Democratic mayor of Chesilhurst, N.J. “It’s not just Gov. Christie, any organization or business where you’re hiring people, people get fired because they do things they’re not supposed to do. So I believe him in what he said about what happened. I still support him.”
Blunt said he faced no political pressure to back Christie and said he never heard of Christie’s team applying pressure to others.
“My endorsement is based on the things that he’s done for my community and how he’s handled himself in the state of New Jersey,” he said. “There was no coercion,” he added.
The Christie campaign touted the backing of Democratic mayors and other officials to burnish the Republican incumbent’s bipartisan credibility ahead of an expected 2016 run for the White House. So far there’s no sign he’ll lose that Democratic mayoral support as he struggles to get his second term on track after firing some of his closest aides in reaction to what Democrats are calling Bridgegate.
“I can assure you I did not feel pressured at all,” Palmyra Mayor Karen Scheffler told the AP Wednesday. Scheffler did not immediately respond to questions left on her cellphone voicemail Thursday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) still insisted on Thursday that New Jersey officials may have closed three lanes on the George Washington Bridge in September to study traffic patterns, directly contradicting statements Port Authority officials made last year.
“What I was told was that it was a traffic study, and there was no evidence to the contrary until yesterday,” Christie said at a press conference apologizing for his administration’s role in shutting down bridge lanes and causing potentially life-threatening traffic jams. “There still may have been a traffic study that now has political overtones to it as well,” he added.
But in early December, three Port Authority officials testified that “there was no traffic study being conducted while access lanes from Fort Lee on the George Washington Bridge were closed in September.”
Port Authority executive director Patrick Foye, a Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) appointee, testified on Dec. 9 that the study did not exist. New Jersey’s top official at the authority, Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni — a Christie appointee — had claimed the closings were for a traffic study. Baroni has since resigned.

In her concession speech, Buono praised supporters who "withstood the onslaught of betrayal from our own political party."
"The Democratic political bosses, some elected and some not, made a deal with this governor," she said, according to NorthJersey.com. "They didn’t do it for the state. They did it out of a desire to help themselves."
Over the course of the 2013 campaign, several Democrats in New Jersey crossed party lines and backed Christie's reelection bid, including Sea Bright, N.J. Mayor Dina Long, state Sen. Brian Stack (D-Union City), Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, and Spring Lake Mayor Jennifer Naughton.
Buono's last-minute campaign efforts also came with little involvement from President Barack Obama or other high-profile Democrats. Obama included her in a final-push email encouraging Democrats to head to the polls, but according to the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger, that left some irritated Dems questioning whether Obama did more for Christie. The duo had a notable embrace back in May at an event to promote tourism post-Hurricane Sandy, while Buono was in the audience and only able to meet with the president before his speech.
