Joan Walsh to Joe Biden: "Don't run"

CNN political analyst Joan Walsh suggested that if former Vice-President Joe Biden really wanted to change the so-called “white man’s culture” then he would not run for President in 2020.

Walsh’s remarks were in response to comments Biden made on Tuesday lamenting how Anita Hill was treated during the Clarence Thomas hearings — hearings over which Biden presided.

Panning the “white man’s culture,” Biden said this during the Biden Courage Awards ceremony in New York: “She paid a terrible price. She was abused through the hearing…To this day, I regret I couldn’t get her the kind of hearing she deserved.”

[...]

“You’ve got Joe Biden as the white grandfather in all of this, the white man saying it’s a white man’s culture. Okay. It’s got to change,” (host Erin) Burnett said.

[...]

“I have an idea for how he can change it. Don’t run,” Walsh said. “Come out and support a woman. There’s six women in the race, four female senators. If you want to change it, that’s a way to change it. You know, I admire Joe Biden. I am a fond Democrat. He was a great vice president. But you want to change it? Don’t run.”

She then added his treatment of Hill was not going away.

It “will remain a huge issue if he does run,” she stressed.

Being from Texas

and being left myself, I have a somewhat jaundiced view of Beto and Castro's progressivism.

I am also strongly anti-war and anti-interventionist, so perhaps that helps explain my bias in the scoring above. Reasonable can politely disagree, and I hope your post draws some more opinions as food for thought.

I'll give this a stab

left to center-left:

Bernie
Tulsi
Warren
Marianne Williamson
Jay Inslee
Andrew Yang
Mayor Pete
Kamala
Cory Booker
Beto

too difficult for me to distinguish between, in center to center-right:
Kristen Gillibrand
Amy Klobuchar
Julian Castro
Joe Biden
John Hickenlooper
John Delaney

YMMV.

Well, there's Bootyjudge

whom a lot of people here like (and I do too, word play on his name is just ).

And also Booker.

So I think maybe "Killer B's" sounds better.

And for the record... Bernie would have won.

Beto (and Castro) can run for both president and Senate

I don't support either at this time for the nomination (and I'm Texan). Both are a little too close to the center for my taste; don't have the experience I'm looking for. Beto couldn't beat Ted Cruz here. And Cruz couldn't beat trump.

That said ....

Either would make excellent running mates for the right nominee. Maybe not Biden (though that's been rumored in Beto's case; better odds for Julian, best odds for Stacey Abrams) or Sanders, perhaps Kamala or Liz Warren, Amy Klobuchar, or even Cory Booker should one of those emerge victorious from the primaries. (I'm not betting on a brokered convention just yet.)

There's an interesting quirk in Texas that Twitterians seem to have overlooked yesterday, and that's the LBJ law. It means that both Beto and Castro can run for both president and US Senate (against John Cornyn) next year. I fully expect both to avail themselves of this.

The conversation so far has been presented as an either-or — that if O’Rourke runs for Senate, he’d be out of the presidential race. But both O’Rourke and Castro would be eligible to be on the Texas ticket for Senate and for president or vice president, if they so desired. Texas law prevents candidates from filing for more than one office, except for that LBJ exemption. And the exemption in the Texas Election Code is broader than history might indicate: “This section does not apply to candidacy for the office of president or vice-president of the United States and another office.”

So while I do not think either man can capture the nomination, one would be a strong ticket mate for the right nominee. And the other can very probably win the US Senate primary (although I'm also supporting the progressive Democrat in that race).

My point here is that with Beto and Castro both on the top of the 2020 ballot, Texas turns blue. And the GOP loses Texas, the White House, the Senate ...

Even George Will knows this.

Your thoughts?

I don't

Sorry, but he couldn't beat Ted Cruz here. And Cruz couldn't beat trump.

What precisely -- if you would, please -- makes you think he can win the Democratic nomination? Charm is certainly a nice quality, but he's weak on the issues that appear to be driving D voters' enthusiasm this cycle (where he even has firm stands on them).

My belief, FWIW, is that Beto will make someone a helpful running mate; probably not Biden or Sanders, perhaps Kamala or Liz Warren, Amy Klobuchar, or Cory Booker should they be nominated.

One other point: Perhaps you are aware that the LBJ law in Texas means he can run for both president and US Senate (against John Cornyn) next year. I fully expect both O'Rourke and Julián Castro to avail themselves of this.
