Bernie Worrell, the ingenious "Wizard of Woo" whose amazing array of keyboard sounds and textures helped define the Parliament-Funkadelic musical empire and influenced performers of funk, rock, hip-hop and other genres, has died.
Worrell, who announced in early 2016 that he had stage-four lung cancer, died Friday at age 72. He died at his home in Everson, Washington, according to his wife, Judie Worrell.
Throughout the 1970s and into the '80s, George Clinton's dual projects of Parliament and Funkadelic and their various spinoffs built upon the sounds of James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone among others and turned out some of the most complex, spaced out, political, cartoonish and, of course, danceable music of the era, elevating the funk groove to a world view.
With a core group featuring Worrell, guitarist Eddie Hazel and bassist Bootsy Collins, P-Funk maintained an exhausting and dazzling pace of recordings, from the hit singles "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" and "Flash Light" to such albums as "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome." And the studio music was just a starting point for the live shows, costumed spectaculars of wide-brimmed hats, war paint, dashikis, military gear or perhaps a white sheet with only a fig leaf underneath.
Worrell was among the first musicians to use a Moog synthesizer, and his mastery brought comparisons to Jimi Hendrix's innovations on guitar. Anything seemed possible when he was on keyboards, conjuring squiggles, squirts, stutters and hiccups on Parliament's "Flash Light" that sounded like funk as if conceived by Martians. On Funkadelic's "Atmosphere," his chatty organ prelude, like a mash-up of Bach and "The Munsters," set up some of Clinton's more unprintable lyrics.

Republican Rep. Steve King introduced an amendment to bar the Treasury Department from spending any funds to redesign paper money or coin currency.
If the amendment is enacted, it would nullify the Treasury Department's plans to replace the current image of Jackson on the $20 bill with a portrait of Tubman, one of the most prominent abolitionists for her work in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. She would become the first black woman ever to appear on a U.S. banknote.
King's reason for introducing the amendment was not immediately clear, and his office did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment.

LAS VEGAS — A federal officer says a man arrested at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas told authorities he tried to grab an officer's gun so he could kill the candidate.
A complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Nevada charges Michael Steven Sandford with an act of violence on restricted grounds.
It cites a report by Special Agent Swierkowski, whose first name was not included, saying Sandford told officers he drove from California to kill Trump and went to a Las Vegas gun range the day before to learn to shoot.
Sandford later went to a Trump rally at the Treasure Island Casino and approached a Las Vegas police officer to say he wanted an autograph from Trump.
The report says Sandford was arrested after grabbing the handle of an officer's gun in an attempt to remove it.

...and go forth with his message. We won't be able to attack the presumptive nominee, granted, but why would we want to at this point?We should save those attacks for the biggest danger to our democracy AND our very way-of-life... the Orange One!
Oh, and to those profile-peepers, my favorite group is NOT "Hillary Clinton". I posted there yesterday begging them to stop driving voters away from their candidate, the presumptive nominee (which changed my "favorite group" status). Since then, I've been attacked by both Senator Sanders AND Secretary Clinton supporters.
And, since a few Senator Sanders' supporters said to me that Hillary is as dangerous as Trump, I ask, *REALLY*???? It's.not.even.close.
Let's continue to move Senator Sanders and his message forward, and leave the inter-partisanship and hate behind.

Ronnie Claire Edwards, Corabeth Godsey from the Waltons, dead at 83
Ronnie Claire Edwards, the veteran actress on the beloved TV series,The Waltons, has died, according to her Facebook page. She was 83.
"Ronnie Claire passed peacefully in her sleep this evening," her page said late Tuesday. "Our beautiful and extraordinary friend has peacefully made her final curtain call. Thank you all for your wonderful caring and support."
Edwards, who had been living in Texas, had a long TV and film career but was best known for playing Corabeth Walton Godsey, the domineering wife of storekeeper Ike Godsey, in the CBS series about a Virginia mountain family living through the 1930s financial depression and World War II.
The series ran for nine years in the 1970s; Edwards began appearing in it in 1975.

Retired astronaut charged with murder in crash that killed 2 girls

(CNN)A retired NASA astronaut has been charged with murder following an auto collision in Alabama that resulted in the death of two girls.
James Donald Halsell Jr., 59, was arrested and charged Monday with two counts of murder in a possible DUI accident that killed Naiomi Deona James, 11, and Jayla Latrice Parler, 13.
Alabama Senior Trooper Reginal King said the girls were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from a vehicle Monday near Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
James was pronounced dead at the scene, and Parler was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, where she was pronounced dead.
Halsell logged more than 1,250 hours in space throughout five space shuttle missions for NASA, according to biographical data from the space agency. He commanded three of those missions before retiring in 2006. He led the space shuttle's return-to-flight planning team after the Columbia disaster in 2003.

Penn Jillette: Time for atheists to stand up and be counted
(CNN)This weekend on the Mall in Washington, a bunch of atheists — tens of thousands, including me -- will get together just to be counted as not having a personal god.
Why? Whether the pollsters bemoan it or celebrate it, the percentage of Americans who are losing their religion is rising. And in a presidential election year, candidates need to take note.
Two of those remaining, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, still give lip service to being religious -- even if many on either side of religion don't believe them or want to claim them. (Why would this be the only thing either one of them would tell the truth about?)
