The GOP's monstrous math problem

Axios

Republicans, win or lose next week, face a big — and growing — math problem.

The state of play: They're relying almost exclusively on a shrinking demographic (white men), living in shrinking areas (small, rural towns), creating a reliance on people with shrinking incomes (white workers without college degrees) to survive.

Why it matters: You can't win elections without diversity, bigger population centers and sufficient money.

Flashback: Before President Trump, the GOP acknowledged all this. Then-RNC Chair Reince Priebus said in his "autopsy" after Mitt Romney's loss in 2012: "We need to campaign among Hispanic, black, Asian and gay Americans and demonstrate we care about them, too. We must recruit more candidates who come from minority communities."

Postal Service ordered to reverse mail collection limitations

Source: The Hill

A federal judge on Tuesday night ordered the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to immediately reverse limitations on mail collection that had been put in place by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, commanding the agency to inform workers of the court's changes by Wednesday morning.

Judge Emmet Sullivan of the District Court for the District of Columbia granted an emergency motion against President Trump, according to the detailed order obtained by Politico. Sullivan granted the emergency motion to enforce and monitor compliance with the preliminary injunction issued late last month that prevented the administration from enforcing DeJoy’s operational changes.

The agency has until 9 a.m. on Wednesday to inform workers that DeJoy’s guidelines, implemented in July, limiting late and extra trips to collect mail, are rescinded.

The news comes as a record number of Americans have already cast their ballots for the Nov. 3 election through the mail as a safety precaution during the coronavirus pandemic.

Alex Jones on Joe Rogan Podcast Sparks Outrage, People Cancelling Their Spotify Accounts

Newsweek

Joe Rogan is facing backlash from a number of Spotify listeners after hosting far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on his podcast this week.

With one week to go until the U.S. election, The Joe Rogan Experience platformed the controversial guest leaving many people who are upset at the nature of what was discussed declaring their intentions to cancel their accounts with the streaming platform.

Jones was banned from a number of platforms, including Spotify, last year and his previous appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience have not been added to Spotify as part of Rogan's deal.

I can recall being told we needed to tune in to Rogan's listener base to be politically successful....

MAGA scrambles to repair the Hunter Biden narrative

Politico

Weeks ago, when Rudy Giuluani first threw the contents of Hunter Biden’s alleged laptop online, he promised a trove of even more damning information 10 days before the election.

Yet with less than a week to go, Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, is still moving down the conservative media food chain, looking for takers.

The Wall Street Journal and Fox News have both reported finding no evidence that former Vice President Joe Biden benefited from the Hunter Biden business dealings that have drawn scrutiny. More explicitly pro-Trump media outlets — OAN, Breitbart, Newsmax — have mostly shied away from publishing fresher, more salacious allegations. And conservative talking heads — pundits, politicians and loud MAGA Twitter personalities alike — have been more focused on the meta narrative around the laptop, arguing that mainstream media, social media companies and the deep state are conspiring to prevent President Donald Trump’s reelection by suppressing the story.

When Breitbart did touch on new revelations, it preemptively distanced itself, carefully framing a fresh trove of emails as an independent investigation by Peter Schweizer, author of “Clinton Cash,” the 2015 look into the Clinton family’s extensive foreign financial ties that made several overstated or inaccurate claims.

Beto O'Rourke Has Some Final Advice for the Biden Campaign

Politico

EL PASO, Texas — Beto O’Rourke was on the phone in between stops while canvassing in Bexar county, Texas, and he was trying to walk a fine line between not pissing off his friends in the Biden campaign, perhaps even creating a controversy that harms Biden’s chances to win, and making an urgent plea for Joe Biden to come campaign in Texas — now.

“I’m not complaining and I don’t have any beef with the Biden campaign but I’m just trying to make the best case for Texas.”

O’Rourke has made the case privately to Biden and to Kamala Harris. “They have been very responsive in hearing me out, talking it through,” he said. Harris in fact will come here on Friday, making her the highest level campaign figure to hit the state.

O’Rourke has made the case to Jen O'Malley Dillon, his former campaign manager who now manages the Biden campaign. “Jen has been great,” he insisted, though others close to O’Rourke here in El Paso who make up his brain trust told me they have become deeply frustrated with her.

How Long Will Vote Counting Take? Estimates and Deadlines in All 50 States

New York Times

Although many winners may quickly be evident on election night, the increase in mail voting because of the pandemic is expected to push back the release of full results in many key states.

The New York Times asked officials in every state and the District of Columbia about their reporting processes and what share of votes they expect to be counted by noon on Wednesday, Nov. 4. There is a fair amount of uncertainty surrounding results in any election, but here’s what they said to expect:

Many states will not have complete results on election night.

Even once the early and in-person ballots are counted, a significant number of votes could still be outstanding. Only eight states expect to have at least 98 percent of unofficial results reported by noon the day after the election. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia allow postmarked ballots to arrive after Election Day, so the timing will depend on when voters return them.

New York, Rhode Island and Alaska will not report any mail votes on election night. Officials in Michigan and Pennsylvania, two key battleground states, have said full official counts could take several days.

Hundreds of Trump supporters stuck in the cold for hours when buses can't reach Omaha rally

Source: Washington Post

By the time President Trump finished speaking to thousands of supporters at Omaha’s Eppley Airfield on Tuesday night and jetted away on Air Force One, the temperature had plunged to nearly freezing.

But as long lines of MAGA-clad attendees queued up for buses to take them to distant parking lots, it quickly became clear that something was wrong.

The buses, the huge crowd soon learned, couldn’t navigate the jammed airport roads. For hours, attendees — including many elderly Trump supporters — stood in the cold, as police scrambled to help those most at-risk get to warmth.

At least seven people were taken to hospitals, according to Omaha Scanner, which monitors official radio traffic. Police and fire authorities didn’t immediately return messages from The Washington Post early Wednesday and declined to provide reporters on the scene with precise numbers of how many needed treatment.
