Poll: Biden bolsters lead over Trump in Michigan after first debate

Source: WDIV News

DETROIT – Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has increased his lead over President Donald Trump in Michigan following the first debate, according to a new WDIV/Detroit News poll.

The results of the latest survey asked voters about the 2020 race for president, along with their feelings on mail-in voting and other important issues.

Here are some of the key findings from the WDIV/Detroit News poll, which was conducted between Sept. 30 and Oct. 3, 2020.

Following the first debate of the 2020 election, Joe Biden has taken his largest lead of the Presidential race in Michigan, leading Donald Trump 48.0%- 39.2% -- a lead of 8.8%. Trump has lost three points of support since the September post-convention survey.

Trump's Campaign Saw an Opportunity. He Undermined It.

New York Times

On Friday, even as President Trump had trouble getting enough oxygen and aides prepared to move him to the nation’s top military hospital, some of his campaign advisers saw a potential opportunity.

If Mr. Trump recovered quickly from his bout with the coronavirus and then appeared sympathetic to the public in how he talked about his own experience and that of millions of other Americans, he could have something of a political reset. The health crisis, one campaign official said, was a setback in a re-election campaign that polls have shown him losing for months, but also a chance to demonstrate a new stance toward the virus that might win over some voters.

And the president could use that to show from now until the second presidential debate, scheduled for Oct. 15, that the disease is serious but can be combated, and that he was ready to re-enter the campaign.

While that was the hope, it was severely undermined over the last few days by the president’s own behavior — no more so than Monday when he tweeted to the nation “Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life!” without acknowledging that, as president, he gets far better care than the average citizen. His comments signaled a far likelier reality: that the erratic handling of his illness by Mr. Trump and his aides will remind voters of his administration’s failures and efforts to play down the deadly pandemic for six months.

AL-SEH poll (Auburn Univ): Jones -12

AUM Poll: Tommy Tuberville leads Doug Jones by 12 points in closing weeks of Alabama Senate race

A newly released AUM Poll from Auburn University at Montgomery’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration shows Republican U.S. Senate nominee Tommy Tuberville leading incumbent Democratic Sen. Doug Jones by nearly 12 percentage points heading into the November 3 general election.

According to poll results, approximately 54 percent of Alabamians intend to vote for Tuberville, a former Auburn University head football coach, with 42 percent planning to vote for Jones in the upcoming Alabama Senate race. Approximately 4 percent of voters plan to write in another candidate’s name at the polls this November.

“Poll results show that Tuberville enjoys his widest levels of support among voters who are white, older, have less education, and belong to an evangelical congregation,” said David Hughes, an assistant professor of political science and director of AUM Poll. “These trends typify voting today.”

Can Trump push a reset button after COVID-19?

Roll Call

The Journal has some excellent political reporters and editors, and it is a good place to follow developments in the business world. But its editorial board consistently demonstrates that it knows nothing about campaigns, elections or public opinion.

I don’t know under which rock these people have been living for the past four years, but Trump has been so unfailingly “optimistic” that he, his press secretary and his personal physician have little credibility left. Trump promises, brags, boasts and generally says that everything is great. And tomorrow? It will be bigger and greater than ever. How’s that for optimism?

What Trump has needed for months, even years, is not phony sales hype but a seriousness and thoughtfulness that is well beyond his abilities. What he has needed is a message of hope based on bringing the country together.

As for empathy, which the editorial board suggests he should convey, Trump has not shown enough empathy over the past four years to fill an eye dropper. Is he supposed to turn on his empathy machine with four weeks to go before the election, and if he did, would any normal person believe it?

But it’s Henninger’s suggestion that Trump talk to the American public in a series of fireside chats delivered “in a kind of relaxed way” that sounds as if he has spent the last five years on another planet.

The Internal Revenue Service is investigating longtime National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre for possible criminal tax fraud related to his personal taxes, according to people familiar with the matter.

Giuliani: 'No reason to delay' second Trump-Biden debate

Source: Politico

Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney and an adviser to his debate preparations, said Monday there is “no reason to delay” next week’s forum with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden — even though Trump remains hospitalized with Covid-19.

In an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the former New York mayor said “it’s very possible” the upcoming town hall-style event will proceed as planned on Oct. 15 if Trump “keeps making progress” in his fight against the coronavirus.

“The doctors assume that by a certain time, he’s going to be in condition. I assume he’s going to be in condition by then to do it. Can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t. And there’s no reason to delay,” Giuliani said.

“There’s only two more left,” he added, referring to the remaining pair of presidential debates. “They’re enormously valuable to the American people. And I think he’ll make every effort to make it. I’m certain he will.”
