Andrew Cuomo Is the Control Freak We Need Right Now
New York TimesHe paused. Hed forgotten, perhaps, whom he was talking about and seemed to have strayed to talking about himself. Then, he returned to the subject at hand, introducing the Westchester County executive: And, uh, George Latimer has really stepped up.
Mr. Cuomo has governed New York for more than nine years without inspiring much love. He wins elections by grinding opponents into dust before they can make it to the ballot box. He governs by transaction, not inspiration, as a dispenser of favors and destroyer of insurgents dreams, the purest master of the machine since Lyndon Johnson in his prime.
He has passed marriage equality, cut deals with Republicans, meddled incessantly in the running of the subway system. The people most passionate about politics these days the New Left and the Trump-led right dislike him because he governs as both a social liberal and a friend of business. Many moderate and liberal politicians, who ought in theory to like Mr. Cuomo, simply fear him.
And yet Mr. Cuomo has emerged as the executive best suited for the coronavirus crisis, as President Trump flails and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wrestles haltingly with a crucial decision and then heads to the gym.
Cuomo Doesn't Think New York Can 'Flatten the Curve'
Source: Political Wire
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said he doesnt believe New Yorks health care system will be able to meet the demand required by coronavirus patients, NPR reports.
Said Cuomo: I dont believe well be able to flatten the curve enough to meet the capacity of the health care system.
He repeatedly said the federal government will need to do more and said his administration is working with the National Guard and health officials to identify facilities that could be retrofitted to serve as hospitals, like dorms and old nursing homes.

Berniecrat running against DWS in Florida beats up on Pelosi's COVID-19 legislation (email)
Last Friday night, House Leadership took a victory lap for passing legislation to address the growing Coronavirus pandemic which included a temporary provision for 10 paid sick days for workers facing the COVID-19 health care crisis.
However, this legislation falls drastically short.
Only 20% of American workers would be guaranteed paid sick leave since our nations largest employers like Walmart, McDonalds and other mega-corporations with 500 or more employees would be given exemption from this requirement.
My opponent, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, made unbelievable compromises by voting for this bill in order to gain partisan support by putting corporate profits over the health and well being of every day American workers and their families!
San Francisco ordered to shelter in place due to coronavirus
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
San Francisco Mayor London Breed is telling city residents to stay in their homes as a shelter-in-place order is issued.
"Effective at midnight, San Francisco will require people to stay home except for essential needs," Breed tweeted at noon Monday. "Necessary government functions & essential stores will remain open."
Individuals are asked to avoid all gatherings except for medical purposes, to get food, or for work reasons.
"These steps are based on the advice of public health experts to slow the spread of #COVID19," Breed said. "The most important thing you can do is remain home as much as possible. There is no need to rush out for food or supplies, as these stores will remain open."

Universal Pictures, in a bold move to confront the coronavirus threat to the movie industry, is collapsing the theatrical window.
In an extraordinary step, the studio on Monday said it will make its movies available in the home on the same day as their global theatrical releases, beginning with DreamWorks Animations Trolls World Tour, opening April 10 in the U.S.
The company will also make movies that are currently in theatrical release available on-demand starting as early as Friday, starting with The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Emma.

Please take what I'm going to say here seriously..
I've mentioned my journalist friend who specializes in infectious disease and has been monitoring and reporting on COVID-19. She has seen contingency plans for an Italy-style lockdown in NYC and other major urban centers (including possible road closures and air/rail suspensions), and her view is that we should prepare for something as soon as Friday. As she puts it: decide now where you want to be and who you want to be with for the duration.
I'll note that there have been public calls for a NYC lockdown by the City Controller and members of the City Council, and that Dr. Fauci has suggested a national lockdown policy for up to two weeks. Additionally, Gov. Murphy has implemented a nighttime travel ban on NJ roads starting this evening.
I'm leaving tomorrow for DC to pick up my wife and bring her back to NY (preferably before evening).
New Jersey issues an 8 p.m. curfew to restrict travel and fight the spread of coronavirus
Source: CNN
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy issued a curfew Monday that restricts travel from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to fight the spread of coronavirus.
"All non-essential and non-emergency travel in Jersey is strongly discouraged beginning tonight at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each day," Murphy said. "This will remain in effect for the foreseeable future. We want everybody to be home, not out."
In doing so New Jersey becomes the first US state to take such a step. On Sunday the US territory of Puerto Rico instituted a 9 p.m. curfew.
As of Monday morning New Jersey had 98 confirmed cases of coronavirus and two deaths.

BA, Easyjet and Ryanair ground most flights as shares dive
Source: The Times
Britains three busiest airlines British Airways, Easyjet and Ryanair have announced mass groundings of their aircraft which will see the vast majority of their scheduled services not flown in April and May.
That news plus a growing number of travel restrictions around Europe and the world because of the coronavirus pandemic, sent airline stocks plummeting once more.
Ryanair, which is Europes busiest airline and the favoured choice of many travellers looking for the cheapest, lowest service option, had been expecting to handle 150 million passengers this year. It accounts for more than two thirds of services at Stansted, Londons third airport.
