Liberal Jill Karofsky defeats conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Daniel Kelly

Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

MADISON - Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky won the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court, narrowing the conservative majority after a tumultuous election conducted in the midst of a global pandemic, according to results released Monday.

Incomplete returns showed her leading, with more results to come from liberal Dane County.

A Karofsky victory would mark the first time in a dozen years that a Supreme Court challenger defeated an incumbent — and just the second time in more than half a century. Her win over Justice Daniel Kelly would shift conservative control of the court from 5-2 to 4-3.

Washington, Oregon and California to coordinate reopening of West Coast economies after coronavirus

Source: Seattle Times

Gov. Jay Inslee said Monday that plans to reopen the state’s economy after COVID-19 is contained will be closely coordinated with Oregon and California to ensure that the virus remains contained across the West Coast.

“COVID-19 doesn’t follow state or national boundaries,” the governor’s office said in a statement Monday.

Inslee began closing non-essential businesses in the state on March 16 in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease. The closure was extended to May 4, and many observers believe it could be extended further out of concern that re-opening businesses prematurely could allow a resurgence of the disease, which appears to be leveling off thanks to social distancing and other measures.

Monday’s announcement offered no new specifics on when shuttered businesses might be allowed to reopen. Instead, it said that “in the coming days the governors, their staff and health officials will continue conversations about this regional pact to recovery.”

Countering Donald Trump, Ohio's secretary of state says vote-by-mail is safe

Source: Columbus Dispatch

Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose continues to defend the integrity of voting by mail despite President Donald Trump’s attacks on the process.

On the eve of the scheduled March 17 Ohio primary Election Day, Gov. Mike DeWine and state health officials postponed voting as cases of COVID-19 in the state were climbing. The General Assembly subsequently moved the election to April 28 and required all ballots to be cast by mail, except for some with disabilities or who don’t have a home address.

DeWine, who is also a Republican, and LaRose have produced a video promoting voting through the mail in the upcoming contest.

Even though he voted by mail in Florida himself, Trump has claimed without citing evidence that the practice “corrupt.”
