Seattle entrepreneur touting coronavirus vaccine caused uproar

Source: Seattle Times

Seattle entrepreneur Johnny Stine had admittedly grown tired of waiting for regulators to approve drugs his biotech company was developing, including one he promoted as a coronavirus vaccine.

So, last month he offered his COVID-19 solution on social media for $400 to buyers in Washington and beyond. One of those intrigued was the mayor of the San Juan Island town of Friday Harbor, Farhad Ghatan. He caused a social media stir this month by inviting Stine to visit him during a restricted travel period and perhaps have him try the unauthorized vaccine.

In an interview Wednesday, Ghatan, Friday Harbor’s mayor the past 2 1/2 years, described Stine as a longtime friend of 30 years and said he hadn’t intended to make his Facebook message public. Ghatan said he and Stine postponed the planned visit because of the uproar and that he hasn’t tried the vaccine or helped promote it.

...snip...

But the fallout saw official complaints lodged with multiple Washington state government agencies, including the office of Attorney General Bob Ferguson — who sent Stine a cease-and-desist letter last week warning of possible lawsuits and heavy fines for making “false or unsupported claims’’ about a coronavirus vaccine that doesn’t yet exist.

Former Lindsey Graham donor flips to back Democratic opponent in Senate race

The Hill

A former top donor to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and business executive is jumping across the aisle to support Democrat Jaime Harrison in South Carolina’s Senate race.

Richard Wilkerson, the former chairman and president of Michelin’s operations in North America, said he has known Harrison for years and is confident he can “bring lasting economic opportunity to the people of South Carolina.”

“I am confident that as our next U.S. Senator he will be a tireless advocate for creating well-paying jobs, improving our state’s healthcare system, and training the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow. Jaime is the perfect candidate to bring together South Carolinians from all walks of life. I am proud to endorse Jaime today, and I know first hand he is the change South Carolina needs,” Wilkerson said in a statement Tuesday.

Wilkerson’s role allowed him to oversee Michelin’s operations in South Carolina, which employed nearly 10,000 employees, according to local media. Wilkerson was listed as a member of Graham’s South Carolina finance committee during his short-lived presidential run and has donated more than $10,000 to the South Carolina Republican since 2011, according to finance records.

Surf's down in California: Governor will close beaches

Source: AP News

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom will order all beaches and state parks closed starting Friday after people thronged the seashore during a sweltering weekend despite his social distancing order that aims to slow the spread of the coronavirus, according to a memo sent to police chiefs around the state.

Eric Nuñez, president of the California Police Chiefs Association, said it was sent to the group’s members Wednesday evening so they have time to plan ahead of Newsom’s expected announcement Thursday.

A message to the governor’s office seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned. The memo was first reported by the Los Angeles TV station Fox 11.

While most state parks and many local beaches, trails and parks have been closed for weeks, Newsom’s order is sure to ignite pushback from communities who argue that they can safely provide some relief to residents who are starved of fresh air.

Here's Proof Trump Knows He's Losing

Political Wire

Trump’s internal polls also show him losing Ohio, Iowa and all of Maine. That would boost Biden’s electoral margin to 358 to 180.

Of course, Trump told Reuters he doesn’t believe the polls.

Do you want proof these numbers are correct? Trump isn’t planning trips to Wisconsin. Michigan or Pennsylvania next week. He’s hitting the road to defend Arizona and Ohio, NBC News reports.

If Trump loses either of those two states, he likely loses the election in a landslide.

Federal Court Slams Jill Stein's Attempt to Decertify Certain Electronic Voting Machines for Use in

Source: Election Law Blog

In moving to enforce the Agreement settling her 2016 lawsuit, failed presidential candidate Jill Stein asks me to bar the use of almost 4,000 voting machines, thus making it impossible for Philadelphia to participate in the 2020 presidential election. This is of a piece with the 2016 action itself: Stein’s eleventh-hour voting machine “hacking” allegations and request for a recount that would have disenfranchised some six million Pennsylvania voters. In both instances, Dr. Stein publicly announced that she seeks to promote election integrity. Yet, the Commonwealth suggest that she seeks to promote only herself. Pennsylvania’s computer expert testified credibly in 2016 that Stein’s allegations “are approximately as likely as the fact that androids from outer space are living amongst us and passing as humans.” (12/6/16 Hr’g Tr. 63:23-64 .) Her allegations now— that the challenged voting machines are unreliable and thus violate the Settlement Agreement— are as baseless and irrational. I will deny her Motion.

Justin Amash, Third-Party Spoiler? Michigan Experts Are Skeptical

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/us/politics/justin-amash-president-trump.html" target="_blank">New York Times

If a third-party presidential candidate were going to have a spoiler effect anywhere in 2020, it would seem to be in Michigan, after Representative Justin Amash, a five-term congressman from Grand Rapids, said this week he was preparing a bid for the Libertarian nomination in the November election.

In 2016, after all, Donald J. Trump won Michigan by just 10,700 votes — and the Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson, won 172,000 votes in the state. Mr. Amash’s likely entry into the race, as a native son in a state that is again likely to be a battleground, gave some Democrats and Never Trump Republicans overnight heart palpitations.

Nonetheless, strategists from both major parties in Michigan said on Wednesday that this year’s electoral landscape was so fundamentally altered from four years ago that Mr. Amash was not likely to have a major impact in the state, or on the general election as a whole. If Mr. Trump’s surprising victories in Northern industrial states in 2016 were based on high levels of dislike for the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, which depressed Democratic turnout, those appear to be lesser factors this time around as he prepares to face Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Mr. Amash, who was the sole Republican to support impeachment before leaving the party last year to become an independent, said in an interview that he was not worried about easing the president’s path to a second term.
