Lines start early for haircuts as Georgia begins to reopen

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

They needed a trim, and couldn’t wait any longer. For the the first time in weeks, some Metro Atlanta hair salons and barbershops reopened Friday. And the lines started early.

The first phase of Gov. Brian Kemp’s plan to reopen Georgia during the coronavirus pandemic included haircut shops and gyms, though not all chose to open their doors.

Georgia barbershop owner ‘definitely not opening’ Friday, saying many others won’t either

The owner of a Georgia barbershop said she is not planning to open her doors Friday, when the state lifts coronavirus-related restrictions for businesses like hers.

“I’m definitely not opening this Friday. I don’t have a calendar date for opening,” Diane Fall said Thursday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Fall, who owns Maxim Barbers in Decatur, Georgia, said the task of gathering personal protective equipment and other supplies needed to meet safety requirements by Friday is too onerous.

“Yesterday I went on the internet just looking for capes because they’re saying you have to use one cape for each client. I looked for disposable capes, there’s nothing out there,” Fall explained. “You have to have an infrared thermometer to take the temperature of your employees and each client who walks in the door. This can’t happen overnight.”

A message for Governor Kemp...

" While we are quite eager to return to The Comet, we disagree with the governor that it is now safe to do so. We feel that it is too early in the progression of the pandemic to invite staff and guests to gather, socialize, and bowl together." -- COMET PUB & LANES

Baker calls latest coronavirus death figures 'staggering' (MASS)

Source: Boston Globe

Governor Charlie Baker on Thursday said the latest statewide death figures from COVID-19 are “staggering,” but he also urged residents to continue to visit hospitals for necessary treatment for other serious ailments and sought to assure the public that the healthcare system isn’t being overrun.

Referring to the 2,182 COVID-19 deaths statewide reported as of Wednesday, Baker said during his daily briefing that “these numbers are staggering, and we must remember the people behind these numbers.” He said relatives of the dead have had their worlds “shattered by this ruthless virus.”

In addition, Baker said the grim totals underscore the need to continue protective measures to combat the spread of the virus, such as social distancing and keeping non-essential businesses shuttered for the time being.

At the same time, Baker said, the state’s hospitals have seen a troubling trend — a sharp decrease in the number of patients seeking attention for serious issues such as heart problems, dialysis care, and cancer.

Activists Are Fighting To Keep Bernie Sanders On The New York Ballot

Huffington Post

New York election officials are poised to remove Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) from the state’s primary ballot on Monday, thanks to an obscure provision in the state budget law enacted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) earlier this month.

The provision empowers the state’s election officials to remove from the ballot any candidate who has announced they have stopped running and is thus “no longer eligible” to win the nomination.

New York’s two Democratic election officials, Board of Elections Co-Chair Douglas Kellner and Commissioner Andrew Spano, are due to meet on Monday to discuss the matter.

Kellner, who was appointed by then-Gov. George Pataki (R) in 2005 at the behest of the Democratic-controlled state assembly, told HuffPost on Monday that his job is to interpret the statute. While the law only states that election officials “may” determine that a candidate is no longer eligible, Kellner interprets that language to mean they’re effectively required to remove Sanders.

Ocasio-Cortez says she will vote for Biden in November

Source: The Hill

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said late on Wednesday that she will vote for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in the coming November election.

The moment came during the congresswoman’s livestream discussion with rapper Fat Joe on Instagram on Wednesday night.

At the start of the roughly hourlong discussion on Wednesday, the rapper told her: “It’s three things you can do: You can vote for Trump, you can vote for Biden or you can not vote at all. Who you going to vote for?”
“In November, I’m going to be voting for Joe Biden,” she responded. “But that’s what I’m going to be doing.”

Elizabeth Warren's oldest brother dies of coronavirus in Oklahoma

Source: Boston Globe

Donald Reed Herring, the oldest brother of Senator Elizabeth Warren, died on Tuesday night in Norman, Okla., about three weeks after testing positive for coronavirus.

Herring, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was 86.

Warren, who has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s halting response to the pandemic for months, has not previously revealed that her family was waging its own personal battle against the virus. She confirmed his death in a statement provided to the Globe and said the cause was coronavirus.

“I’m grateful to the nurses and other front-line staff who took care of my brother, but it is hard to know that there was no family to hold his hand or to say ‘I love you’ one more time. And now there’s no funeral for those of us who loved him to hold each other close,” Warren said. “I will miss my brother.”

Op-Ed: GA Governor's decision to reopen businesses is political murder

If there’s no state order calling for businesses to be closed, the people who are unemployed can no longer claim that their unemployment is involuntary, even if it would be utter idiocy for them to return to work. A hairdresser or a massage therapist cannot maintain social distance. But they can certainly file for relief … unless the law says they can work.

“Gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, body art studios, barbers, cosmetologists, hair designers, nail care artists, estheticians, their respective schools & massage therapists.”

Not banks. Not software firms. Not factories. Not schools.

It is no coincidence that the businesses on this list are staffed by relatively poor people. Because that’s who he wants off the unemployment rolls. And if they die … well, they’re mostly black people, or Asian, and poor, and an acceptable political loss for a Republican governor.

The purpose of this isn’t to open up these businesses. It’s to get the workers there off the dole. Work, and die. Or don’t work … but you’re on your own. Because we can’t raise taxes to cover the time you spent trying to save your life and the lives of the people around you.

I am now buying yeast by the pound...

...because it's not possible to buy smaller jars or packets. They're not in stores and most of the online sales are price-gouging. I'm basically relying now on industrial suppliers. The challenge will be breaking the bags up and effectively storing them.
