Video: NYPD Chases Hearse Through Borough Park During Crowded Hasidic Funeral

Gothamist

A Hasidic funeral in Borough Park erupted in chaos on Thursday afternoon, as NYPD efforts to break up the crowded procession were met with defiance from some mourners, leading to at least one arrest.

Video shared with Gothamist shows NYPD officers sprinting after a minivan — believed to be carrying the body of Rabbi Yehezkel Shraga Vagshal — as hundreds of Orthodox Jews packed the streets of 13th Avenue. Witnesses said that police handcuffed a young boy, and threatened others with summonses for violating social distancing orders and not wearing masks.

A spokesperson for the NYPD, Lieutenant John Grimpel, confirmed that one person was arrested, but could not provide any other details.

The incident comes just two days after Mayor Bill de Blasio personally dispersed a large funeral procession in Williamsburg. “The next gathering will be met with summonses and arrests, period," the mayor said on Wednesday. "If you have a large gathering — hundreds of people, thousands of people — we’re not even going to have a warning."

Whitmer orders Michigan theaters, bars to remain closed until May 28

Source: Detroit Free Press

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered theaters, restaurants, bars, casinos, gyms and other places of accommodation to remain shuttered until May 28 amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

They remain limited to carry-out and delivery orders only.

The executive order issued Thursday extends one set to expire and came as the governor also extended a state of emergency without approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature. The state of emergency was set to expire Thursday night.

Whitmer and the Legislature are at war over her legal authority to now enforce emergency orders. The Legislature plans to take the governor to court.

Internal GOP poll points to troubling signs for Georgia Republicans

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An internal poll conducted for the Georgia House GOP Caucus points to troubling signs for Republican leaders: President Donald Trump is deadlocked with Joe Biden and voters aren’t giving the White House, Gov. Brian Kemp or the Legislature high marks for the coronavirus response.

The poll also suggests trouble for U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, showing the former financial executive with 11% of the vote and essentially tied with Democrats Matt Lieberman and Raphael Warnock. U.S. Rep. Doug Collins leads the November field with 29% of the vote, and outdoes Loeffler among Republicans by a 62-18 margin.

The survey, obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was conducted by the political polling and research firm Cygnal between April 25-27 and it involved 591 likely voters. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

It’s one of the few recent polls that offer a snapshot of how Georgians view the government’s pandemic response, though it was taken before Kemp’s decision Thursday to lift the shelter-in-place order for most Georgians.
