Trump set to skewer Biden in convention address

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump will unload on Joe Biden in a blistering convention speech Thursday night, according to two people familiar with the address.

Trump is expected to go after the former vice president on everything from the economy to trade. He will also talk about Biden’s record on China, immigration, crime, and his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“At no time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas," Trump is expected to say. “We have spent the last four years reversing the damage Joe Biden inflicted over the last 47 years. At the Democrat convention, you barely heard a word about their agenda. But that's not because they don't have one. It's because their agenda is the most extreme set of proposals ever put forward by a major party nominee."

While Republicans have spent this week going after Biden, the president’s aides contend that the media has filtered the convention and hasn’t adequately highlighted criticisms of Biden’s policies. Over the course of this week, additional policy attacks have been added to Trump’s speech.

Former Republican senator from Maine Bill Cohen endorses Biden

Press Herald

Former U.S. Senator and Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen, a Republican from Maine, announced Wednesday that he is endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

“We have a choice in November; whether to go back to our dark past or reach for who we aspire to be – a country where it doesn’t matter where you came from, how you worship or who you love, a country where everyone matters. I’m voting for Joe Biden because our democracy is at stake,” Cohen said in a statement released by the Biden campaign. “Americans are suffering through the worst pandemic in a hundred years, a pandemic predicted to kill close to 200,000 Americans by Election Day due to poor management and failed leadership. Our nation has been shaken to the core during the last four years. We are in serious need of a leader with optimism and competence who gives us hope. Joe Biden is that leader.”

Cohen, who turns 80 on Friday, served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate in 1978. The Bangor native also served three terms in the Senate – alongside Biden, a longtime senator from Delaware – before then-President Bill Clinton tapped him to serve as his secretary of defense.

Cohen’s endorsement of Biden was not unexpected. He has frequently appeared on television or written opinion pieces in national publications during Trump’s first term in office condemning some of the president’s more controversial actions and statements.

DOSE OF JOE -- Aug 27

Friends -- see below for today's Dose of Joe.

At 3 PM ET, Kamala Harris will deliver remarks in Washington, DC on President Trump's failures to contain COVID-19 and protect working families from the economic fallout. You can watch HERE.

Yesterday, former Secretary of Defense and Republican Senator Bill Cohen endorsed Joe Biden, citing the “the serious need of a leader with optimism and competence who gives us hope.”

The Blue Green Alliance, which unites America’s largest labor unions and its most influential environmental organizations, announced their first-ever presidential endorsement of Joe Biden for President.

Joe released a statement on Women’s Equality Day, stating that “it is up to us to carry forward the banner of equality for the next generation— to build on the legacy of Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro.” Kamala published an op-ed in the Washington Post discussing and honoring the generations of women who paved the way for her to become the first women of color on a major party ticket. And Dr. Jill Biden released a video honoring her grandmother and the generations of women who fought for the right to vote.

In a recent Ipsos poll of registered voters conducted for Thomson Reuters, Biden leads Trump by 7 points.

JOE’S TWEETS TO AMPLIFY

@JoeBiden: 180,000 people have died from this COVID crisis. And the heartbreaking truth is that it didn't have to happen this way.

@JoeBiden: This moment demands moral leadership. And these players answered by standing up, speaking out, and using their platform for good. Now is not the time for silence.

@JoeBiden: 100 years ago today, the 19th Amendment was certified, giving some women the right to vote. But we still have further to go. We must carry forward the banner of equality and create that more perfect union we've always strived to be. #WomensEqualityDay

The C.D.C. director, facing criticism, now says testing 'may be considered' for anyone exposed

Source: New York Times

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has scaled back the agency’s recommendation advising some people not to get tested after exposure to the novel coronavirus, now saying “testing may be considered for all close contacts of confirmed or probable Covid-19 patients.”

The statement by Dr. Robert R. Redfield was issued to some news outlets late Wednesday, and more broadly Thursday morning, after a storm of criticism over the new C.D.C. guidelines — involving potentially asymptomatic people — which were the product of the White House Coronavirus task force and not the C.D.C.’s own scientists. Dr. Redfield made the statement in an effort to clarify the new policy, an official said. However, the guidelines issued earlier this week remained on the C.D.C.’s website as of Thursday morning, and it appears unlikely that the agency will change them.

“Testing is meant to drive actions and achieve specific public health objectives,” Dr. Redfield wrote. “Everyone who needs a Covid-19 test, can get a test. Everyone who wants a test does not necessarily need a test; the key is to engage the needed public health community in the decision with the appropriate follow-up action.”

The clarification is unusual. Public health experts say clear, consistent communications are essential to fighting an infectious disease outbreak, and Dr. Redfield’s comments may further confuse things.

POLITICO Playbook: More than 100 Bush-McCain-Romney alums go for Biden

Source: Politico

-- NEW … BUSH 43 ALUMNI FOR BIDEN is releasing a letter this morning detailing why they are supporting BIDEN for president. “In order to emerge strong and ready to tackle the challenges before us, we must act. We must step up, get out of our comfort zone, and vote for Joe Biden. It is time for us to have initiative in our communities and networks to stand up for character, integrity, decency, and leadership,” the letter reads. Notable signers include: former Commerce Secretary CARLOS GUTIERREZ, Bush domestic policy adviser SALLY CANFIELD, former Ambassador JAMES K. GLASSMAN and former U.S. Treasurer ROSARIO MARIN. The letter

-- “Romney 2012 staffers unite behind effort to elect Joe Biden,” by Max Cohen: “More than 30 former staffers from Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign are signing onto an effort to elect Joe Biden — the same man they worked to defeat during the 2012 campaign.

“The latest initiative launched by Republicans eager to unseat their party’s presidential nominee comes as Romney is increasingly viewed with scorn by President Donald Trump’s fervent base. In an open letter obtained by POLITICO, the group, which dubs itself ‘Romney Alumni for Biden,’ says Trump’s rhetoric and actions are antithetical to the Republican Party they believe in.”

-- NYT’S JONATHAN MARTIN: “Over 100 Ex-Staff Members for John McCain Endorse Joe Biden”: “[Mark] Salter, who led the effort to gather signatures along with the former McCain aides Christian Ferry, Niki Christoff and Joe Donoghue, said they had confined their outreach to staff members, and did not seek out McCain family members.” The letter, with all the signatories
