'It looked like a hurricane shelter': Spirit Airlines flight cancellations vex travelers

USA Today

The summer of major flight woes continues, leaving Spirit Airlines passengers the latest to be stranded.

The Florida-based budget carrier canceled 233 flights Monday, or 30% of its scheduled flights, on top of 165 canceled flights Sunday, according to flight tracker FlightAware.

Passengers reported waiting hours in line for refunds and other customer service help at airports in cities including Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Some stranded travelers camped out.

"It looked like a hurricane shelter," passenger Rebecca Osborn said of Spirit's counters at Orlando International Airport.

Spirit Airlines spokesman Erik Hofmeyer blamed the flight cancellations on weather and unspecified operational challenges, a common refrain from airlines including Southwest and American this summer.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says no indoor mask mandate for vaccinated people

Source: CNN

(CNN)New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio strongly encouraged vaccinated people to wear masks indoors but stopped short of reissuing a mask mandate on Monday in what he said was an attempt to focus primarily on vaccinations.

"Everything we're doing is based on data and science, but it's also based on strategy," de Blasio said. "The overwhelming strategic thrust is vaccination, so we thought the right mix was to heavily focus on vaccination, continue to climb the ladder with more and more vaccine requirements in place, and to give a very clear message to all New Yorkers strongly recommending mask usage regardless of vaccination status. But we thought that was the right balance."

The decision not to reissue an indoor mask mandate comes a week after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance that fully vaccinated people should wear masks indoors when in areas of "substantial" or "high" Covid-19 transmission. All five boroughs in NYC are in areas of "substantial" or "high" transmission, a metric based on case rates and positivity rates.

Source: Politico

A Belarusian Olympic athlete who refused to board a flight home from Tokyo after criticizing team officials has been granted a humanitarian visa by Poland.

Krystsina Tsimanouskaya entered the Polish Embassy in Tokyo on Monday and is set to fly to Warsaw on Wednesday, Alexander Opeikin of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Fund, an association that supports athletes who are jailed or prosecuted for political beliefs, wrote on the Telegram messaging service.

“She is OK. She’s a little bit disappointed because she wanted to continue in the Olympic Games,” Opeikin told the New York Times.

Tsimanouskaya “has received a humanitarian visa,” Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz wrote on Twitter, adding that his country “will do whatever is necessary to help her to continue her sporting career.”

More than 100 state legislators joining Texas Democrats to push voting bills in DC

Source: The Hill

More than 100 state legislators are slated to join Texas House Democrats in Washington, D.C., on Monday, as the lawmakers push for federal voting reform.

The lawmakers from nearly 30 states will participate in a “Week of Action” to demand President Biden and the Senate “do whatever it takes to immediately pass the For the People Act,” the sweeping voting right legislation championed by Democrats that was blocked by Senate Republicans.

The state lawmakers are calling for the Senate to stay in session until the For the People Act is passed.

“The freedom to vote is under unprecedented attack by extremist lawmakers in states across the country, including in Arizona,” Arizona state Rep. Jennifer Longdon (D) said in a statement.
