Fun fact: France allows proxy voting.

How do I give power of attorney to another voter?

Publié le 12 juin 2024 - Mise à jour le 01 juillet 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The second round of parliamentary elections will take place on Sunday, July 7, 2024. You won't be able to go to the polling station? You have the option of giving a proxy to a registered voter to vote for you. Service-Public.fr tells you how to do it.

If you are absent or unable to travel to the polling station for the general election, you can give power of attorney to anyone of your choice provided that it is entered on a list of electors (not necessarily in the same commune as you). You can issue a power of attorney for one or both rounds. On the day of the vote, the nominee shall go to your polling station to vote for you.

There is no deadline for the drawing up of proxy votes. However, it is recommended tocomplete the procedure as soon as possible in order to ensure that the power of attorney can be taken into account by the municipality of your municipality.

Yet another Mark Robinson misadventure - a troubled NC child care center

The News & Observer

As Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson runs for governor, questions are being raised about his past bankruptcies and his failures to pay taxes. But there’s another problematic part of Robinson’s history that hasn’t received attention – how he and his wife were cited for numerous violations at the child care center they operated from 2000 to 2007, including a charge that the center presented falsified certification documents to state inspectors.

Robinson’s wife, Yolanda Hill, was the owner of Precious Beginnings Child Development Center in Greensboro. Robinson himself took over management of the center after his wife began a job elsewhere. State inspectors made several unannounced visits to the center and cited it for dozens of violations. Some were minor and corrected. The violations included sanitary, safety and nutrition issues, but the most significant ones involved falsified documents.

According to state Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) records, the Robinsons presented documents attesting to their training certifications and the completion of criminal background checks that the state had no record of issuing. A June 21, 2007, inspection report says “Files for the owner and the husband of the owner contain North Carolina Early Childhood Credential Certificates when the Work Force Unit of the Division of Child Development does not have a record of having issued credentials. Additionally, Criminal Records Qualifying letters are on file for the owner and the husband of the owner. The Criminal Records Unit of the Division does not have a record of having ever received criminal records forms nor issuing qualifying letters to you or your husband.”

The report added that an administrative action against the center’s license was underway because of “attempts to falsify information regarding Credential Certificates.” DHHS has not retained records on the center beyond the inspection reports, a DHHS spokesperson said.

When the French polls closed, @FRANCE24 apparently thought a Le Pen win was a given.....

and had a graphic showing them winning almost half the seats. Their slice didn't match up with the actual numbers.

People commenting on polling in the French elections need to understand the difference...

Polls before the election were HIGHLY ACCURATE in projecting success by LePen's National Rally. What they couldn't do was project results in the second round because voters didn't know who the candidates would be.

In the French system, all Parties put up candidates in District based elections. Any candidate who gets 50+ percent of the vote is immediately elected. Any candidate who gets at least 12.5 percent moves on to a second round. However, there is a tradition of tactical voting and horse-trading where Parties agree to drop their candidate in favor of a more viable one. Hence, many of the non-Right Wing candidates dropped out, giving voters a consolidated alternative to National Rally.

France voter turnout high, with far right seeking power

Source: Reuters

PARIS, July 7 (Reuters) - Voter turnout in France's parliamentary run-off election on Sunday rose sharply from the last time in 2022 in a ballot that could see the far-right National Rally (RN) emerge as the strongest force.

Although the RN is expected to win the most seats in the National Assembly, the latest opinion polls indicated it may fall short of an absolute majority.

A hung parliament would severely dent President Emmanuel Macron's authority and herald a prolonged period of instability and policy deadlock in the euro zone's second-biggest economy.

Should the nationalist, eurosceptic RN secure a majority, it would usher in France's first far-right government since World War Two and send shockwaves through the European Union at a time populist parties are strengthening support across the continent.
