RFK Jr. And Sussman File Lawsuit Challenging End To Religious Exemption For Vaccinations

Source: NY 1

A lawsuit challenging the state’s end to the religious exemption for vaccinations was announced on Wednesday by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., along with longtime legal activist Michael Sussman.

Kennedy and Sussman said the suit was filed on behalf off parents who opposed the measure, approved last month in the state Legislature amid a measles outbreak in Brooklyn and Rockland County with more than 1,000 reported cases.

“To deprive families of the rights to freedom of religious expression, parental rights, and the right to either a public or private education, the state must demonstrate a ‘compelling state interest’ that the state has failed to prove here,” Sussman said in a statement.

The law was approved after an extraordinarily close vote in the Democratic-led Assembly, which was followed by an angry, profanity-laced protest from opponents of the legislation.

WFP will endorse one of these six candidates for president

A few weeks ago, we released our candidate questionnaire and notified all the presidential campaigns, asking them to lay out their visions and their plans. Based on that review, and on input from supporters like you, WFP’s leadership has invited the following six candidates to proceed to the next round of our endorsement process: Cory Booker, Julián Castro, Bill de Blasio, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren.

Over the next few months, we are going to have a chance to ask the candidates questions, and to debate and deliberate among ourselves as a party in a way that we can be proud of. We’re going to engage in meaningful debate, principled struggle, and not shy away from making a call when our people are demanding we do and the world is requiring it.

I want every single one of you to engage. Because if we do this right, I believe the 2020 election will one day be seen as a turning point in history.

Our goal is not only to win an election, but to build a society that works for the many and not the privileged few — and to build a multiracial base of everyday people to do it. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and begin that work with you.

AT&T rolls out a new, super-charged streaming service with HBO shows, 'Friends' and more

CNBC

AT&’s WarnerMedia announced on Tuesday that its new streaming service will be called HBO Max. As the name implies, it includes a lot more than just content from HBO.

HBO Max will include shows and movies from Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Looney Tunes and other content providers. It also includes exclusive rights to stream all 236 episodes of the TV show “Friends.”

The service is expected to launch in beta later this year. AT&T has not said how much it will cost. HBO Max will launch publicly in the spring of 2020 and will include 10,000 hours of content, the company said.

Netflix recently spent $80 million to keep “Friends” through 2019, according to Vulture. Netflix will also lose “The Office” in 2021, when NBC will offer it as part of its $10 per month streaming TV service. Both shows are thought to be two of the most popular on Netflix, which means the company will have to continue funding new programming in order to find another new hit to keep subscribers engaged.

Hard hat used as a weapon in hate-fueled argument

New York Daily News

A seething straphanger beat a woman with a hard hat during a racist tirade in the Bronx early Tuesday, police said.

The raging rail rider got violent with the 34-year-old victim as their No. 2 train rumbled into the Pelham Parkway station about 4:15 a.m., cops said.

“F-----g Hispanics! Go back to your country,” the woman, who is black, allegedly screamed at the victim, who is Hispanic. “You come here to take our jobs!”

When the train stopped, the would-be construction worker, who appeared to be in her early 20s and sported red hair, knocked the older woman in the head with her hard hat several times and took off, authorities said.

Elizabeth Drew: Could the Democrats Blow It?

Project Syndicate

WASHINGTON, DC – The unprecedentedly large number of candidates – 25 at last count – for the Democratic nomination to take on US President Donald Trump in 2020 has led to an awkward opening to the contest. The number of contenders will drop as the qualifications for participating in party debates tighten (especially in September) and some run out of money. Some know they have no real chance at winning, but hope that becoming better known might land them a cabinet post, more lucrative book deals, or larger speaking fees.

Most experienced political observers have assumed that the Democrats can defeat Trump unless they swing too far to the left, turning off those who had supported Barack Obama and then Trump, including the blue-collar workers and suburbanites who decided the 2016 election. There were various moments in both debates when one could envision Trump smiling. And now many Democrats are depressed.

The problem for the Democrats, especially in this election cycle, is that voters in primary contests (in both parties) tend to be more extreme than the parties as a whole. The Democrats’ recent swing to the left began with the 2016 challenge by Bernie Sanders – who calls himself a “democratic socialist” and isn’t a Democratic Party member – to Hillary Clinton’s presumed nomination. Sanders, with his appeal as an insurgent and his unrealistic promises (as well as Clinton’s weaknesses) nearly undid her nomination. Young people in particular found him an exciting anti-establishment figure.

Senator Elizabeth Warren was rising in the polls even before the debates. But her vast policy agenda represents a leap forward in government intervention in the economy and other domestic arrangements; adds up to trillions of dollars, without a clear explanation of how to pay for it; and is unlikely to be approved by Congress (even if the Democrats recapture control of the Senate). None of this has caught up with her, but as she becomes one of the top two or three candidates (drawing some support from Sanders), these vulnerabilities are likely to be exposed.

MPs vote to extend equal marriage and abortion rights to Northern Ireland

Source: The Guardian

MPs have voted resoundingly to extend both same-sex marriage and access to abortion to Northern Ireland, bringing the region into line with the rest of the UK on two of the most significant social issues of the era.

The Commons voted 383 to 73 to pass the same-sex marriage amendment to a largely technical bill on the stalled Northern Ireland assembly, tabled by the Labour MP Conor McGinn, a longstanding campaigner for equal marriage in Northern Ireland.

In a subsequent vote MPs approved an amendment by another Labour MP, Stella Creasy, to extend abortion rights to Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK where it remains illegal. The vote was passed by 332 to 99.

Both second reading amendments were free votes for MPs, as they were viewed as a matter of conscience.
