Trump administration set to deport 1 million targeted undocumented immigrants

Source: New York Daily News

With no immigration reform from Congress, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is set to deport one million undocumented immigrants who’ve been denied asylum or are considered dangerous.

President Trump had set a two-week deadline for Congress to come up with asylum reforms on June 22. Now, ICE is “ready to just perform their mission, which is to go and find, detain and then deport the approximately one million people who have final removal orders,” acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Ken Cuccinelli said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday.

“They’ve been all the way through the due process and have final removal orders,” he said of the targeted migrants.

Cuccinelli said the deportation halt had clogged the immigration system, and was contributing to massive numbers of migrants being detained at border facilities.

Trump hits back over UK ambassador's leaked memos

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump has said Britain’s ambassador to the US has “not served the UK well” as he hit back following the leak of confidential internal memos that presented an unflattering portrait of the president and his administration.

Earlier, the Foreign Office ordered an inquiry into the leaking of the cables, written by the ambassador, Kim Darroch, in which Trump’s White House is described as “uniquely dysfunctional” and “inept”.

Darroch said in the memos that media reports about vicious administration rows (“knife fights”, as he put it) were mostly true. He cast doubt on whether the Trump regime would ever become more stable, described the president as insecure, and suggested Trump’s career might end in disgrace.

Asked about the controversy in New Jersey by reporters on Sunday night, Trump said: “The ambassador has not served the UK well, I can tell you that. We are not big fans of that man … I can say things about him, but I won’t bother.”

Women's Soccer Team to Get Ticker-Tape Parade in New York's Canyon of Heroes

Source: New York Times

Throngs of people on Broadway. Marching bands carrying American flags. Thousands of scraps of confetti paper raining down on the procession below.

For over 100 years, ticker-tape parades in Manhattan have celebrated many events, including the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge, the return of the Apollo 11 astronauts and numerous World Series victories by the Yankees.

Next comes the United States women’s soccer team, which claimed its fourth World Cup title on Sunday in a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands. It will be honored with a ticker-tape parade on Wednesday, according to the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The winning squad from the 2015 World Cup is the only other women’s sports team that has been honored with such a parade.

Here's an MFA/Single-Payer question...

I use a boutique medical practice (One Medical). I pay $200 a year on top of medical fees to ensure I can always get a same day appointment and I won’t be rushed during my visit. Will I still be allowed to under sanders/Warren plan? And if so, is that fair?

Bernie Sanders didn't give a definitive answer on sex work vs. sex trafficking

CNN

In two separate exchanges during a town hall in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sen. Bernie Sanders was asked how he would distinguish between sex work and sex trafficking, an issue of particular relevance to people here. But the Vermont senator could not give a clear answer.

The first question came from a woman who said she had been a supporter of Sanders from the beginning, but wanted to know how he would proceed without conflating the two terms, and what he would do about the House and Senate bills, together known as FOSTA-SESTA, that were designed to reduce sex trafficking, but have in turn made it harder for sex workers to stay on the job.

"We're going to take a hard look at it, but we're not going to give you a definitive answer now," Sanders said in response.

While making clear that he did not want an increase in sex trafficking, Sanders added, "It's a complicated issue, but there are two sides to it, and I promise you we will take a hard look at it."

Buttigieg campaign multiplies in size after huge cash haul

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/07/06/pete-buttigieg-2020-1399034]

Before the first Democratic presidential debates kicked off last week, close to 100 Pete Buttigieg supporters and donors sheltered from the Miami heat in a Hilton hotel conference room, where Buttigieg’s senior staff briefed them on the campaign’s transformation from shoe-string operation to $25 million enterprise.

The officials didn’t reveal Buttigieg’s field-leading second-quarter fundraising total then, but what they did discuss is more important in the long run: how Buttigieg plans to spend the money.

For months, the South Bend, Ind., mayor has run one of the more frugal 2020 campaigns, eschewing on-the-ground organizers in early caucus and primary states and instead focusing on fundraising, media appearances and the candidate’s travel. But Buttigieg is now rapidly expanding his campaign’s footprint to try and build on his gains in the first half of the year.

In Iowa, Buttigieg’s campaign added 30 organizers at the end of June, filling out what had previously been a four-person skeleton crew. A dozen staffers are now on board in New Hampshire. And by the end of the summer, there will be many more: The campaign plans to swell its staff to 300 people by Labor Day, according to multiple people briefed on its plans.

Kamala Harris proposes $100 billion plan for black homeownership

Politico

Kamala Harris, calling on the nation to “deal with the racial wealth gap,” on Saturday proposed a $100 billion federal program to help black people buy homes.

The California senator said the plan, which would provide down payment and closing cost assistance of up to $25,000 to people renting or living in historically red-lined communities, would help some 4 million home-buyers.

Black voters are a critical constituency in the Democratic primary, especially in the South.

Harris, speaking at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, said her program would “put homeownership within the reach” of millions of families.

“A typical black family has just $10 of wealth for every $100 held by a white family,” she said. “So we must right that wrong and, after generations of discrimination, give black families a real shot at homeownership — historically one of the most powerful drivers of wealth in our country."

Harris’ housing program would come in the form of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants limited to families with incomes up to $100,000, or $125,000 in high-cost areas.

Jeffrey Epstein arrested in New York, charged with sex trafficking

Source: Miami Herald

More than a decade after receiving one of the most lenient sentences for a serial sex offender in U.S history, multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested in New York, sources confirmed to the Miami Herald Saturday night.

Epstein, 66, is expected to be arraigned in federal court in New York on Monday on charges that he molested dozens of underage girls in New York and in Florida, the sources said. His arrest, first reported by the Daily Beast, comes nearly two weeks after the Justice Department announced that it would not throw out his 2008 non-prosecution agreement, even though a federal judge ruled it was illegal.

Rumors had been circulating for months that Epstein was under investigation on sex charges in the Southern District of New York. It’s not clear what those investigations involved, and the Herald had not been able to confirm the status of the New York probe.

Sources said he was arrested Saturday night by the FBI, pursuant to a sealed indictment that will be unsealed on Monday. He is in custody in New York and a bail hearing is set for Monday.
