Lombardo used work email to communicate strategy with top consultants, records show (Nevada)

Source: Nevada Independent

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, the Republican candidate for governor, used his official police department email to communicate with his campaign team and direct department employees to conduct research later used by his campaign, emails obtained by The Nevada Independent show.

The four emails, part of a set of 40 that were reviewed and ordered to be released by a judge following a lengthy public records lawsuit, detail a handful of communications in 2021 between Lombardo and his top campaign consultants in his campaign for governor — Mike Slanker of November, Inc. and Ryan Erwin of Red Rock Strategies.

The emails broadly include the sharing of information on criminal justice trends and immigration between staff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Lombardo and his campaign consultants. Democrats have used the lawsuit and legal fight over release of the emails as campaign fodder, calling it evidence that he is using his “government email for political gain.”

“Largely sent from his personal devices, Sheriff Lombardo’s occasional emails to campaign staff are neither noteworthy nor significant, nor do they present any conflict with state ethics law,” a Lombardo campaign spokeswoman said in an email to The Nevada Independent.

Democratic senators and Senate candidates are reporting huge fundraising numbers for the third quart

Source: Politico

What's happening: With the midterm elections about a month away, we're getting more details on the millions Democrats running for Senate have hauled in for their campaigns' final sprints.

The details: In Wisconsin, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D), who's running against incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R), raised more than $20.1 million for the third quarter, with nearly half a million individual donations.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) has pulled in $17.2 million, nearly doubling what the campaign raised in the second quarter, according to a press release.

Other eyepopping Democratic figures:
Sen. Raphael Warnock's (D-Ga.) campaign raised more than $26 million within the last three months.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) reported raising more than $15 million.
Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) raked in more than $5 million, as we reported on Tuesday.

Fetterman's Support Solidifies in Pennsylvania

A new Monmouth poll in Pennsylvania finds 48% of voters will either definitely or probably vote for John Fetterman (D) in the U.S. Senate race, while 43% of voters will either definitely or probably vote for Mehmet Oz (R).

Said pollster Patrick Murray: “Fetterman maintains an edge as his support is starting to solidify. Oz’s higher negatives are driven in large part by the sense that that he is out of touch with most Pennsylvanians.”

The E.U. is preparing for blackouts this winter, amid an energy crisis

Source: Washington Post

An energy supply crunch tied to the war in Ukraine could cause widespread blackouts in the European Union this winter, an official in charge of managing crises within the bloc has warned.

The European Union is shoring up its resources as temperatures drop and preparing for two “conceivable scenarios”: One in which a few member states experience power cuts, and another in which blackouts occur in many member states at the same time, E.U. Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic told Germany’s RND media.

In the first scenario, E.U. states could step in to provide targeted help to affected countries, including emergency power generators. But in the case of more widespread blackouts, the European Commission would be forced to draw from its strategic energy reserve, while individual countries would cap their emergency aid deliveries, Lenarcic added.

European officials insist they are better prepared for what’s to come than at the start of the war in Ukraine, with stores of natural gas in the E.U. at nearly 90 percent of capacity — 15 percent higher than the same day last year. Still, more needs to be done to ensure the bloc can quickly respond to “sudden disruptions” in energy supply, and to “better protect” critical networks in the E.U., European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday.

Democrats hold 3-point advantage on generic congressional ballot ahead of midterms

The Hill

Forty six percent of registered voters said they will vote for Democratic candidates in the midterm elections, a 3-point lead over Republicans, according to a Politico-Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday.

The pollster has asked the question weekly as the elections approach, with Democrats holding a slight lead in each iteration for more than a month.

Forty three percent in the latest poll indicated support for Republicans, while 12 percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion.

A majority of voters — 53 percent — who ranked the economy as their No. 1 issue favored Republicans, with 34 percent of those respondents supporting Democrats.

US mortgage rates hit 16-year high

Source: The Hill

Mortgage rates reached a 16-year high last week, further dampening demand from home buyers, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association released Wednesday.

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 6.75 percent in the final week of September, the highest figure since 2006. Mortgage rates have climbed a whopping 1.3 percentage points over seven straight weeks of increases.

Mortgage applications fell 14.2 percent from the week prior, according to the MBA, amid rising mortgage rates, which stem from the Federal Reserve’s persistent interest rate hikes aimed at fighting inflation.

“The steep increase in rates continued to halt refinance activity and is also impacting purchase applications, which have fallen 37 percent behind last year’s pace,” Joel Kan, MBA’s associate vice president of economic and industry forecasting, said in a statement.

The Real Reason Donald Trump Is Suing CNN

Political Wire

CNN itself noted in correspondence with Trump that was excerpted in the legal filing: “While we will address the merits of any lawsuit should one be filed, we note that you have not identified a single false or defamatory statement in your letter.”

And that brings us to the real reason Trump is suing CNN.

Less than 24 hours after filing the lawsuit, Bloomberg reports Trump put out an email to supporters to donate to his cause:

I am SUING the Corrupt News Network (CNN) for DEFAMING and SLANDERING my name. Remember, when they come after ME, they are really coming after YOU.
