• If you’re an immigration lawyer, the American Immigration Lawyers Association will be sending around a volunteer list for you to help represent the women and men with their asylum screening, bond hearings, ongoing asylum representation, etc. Please sign up.
• Al Otro Lado is a binational organization that works to offer legal services to deportees and migrants in Tijuana, Mexico, including deportee parents whose children remain in the U.S.
• CARA—a consortium of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association—provides legal services at family detention centers.
• The Florence Project is an Arizona project offering free legal services to men, women, and unaccompanied children in immigration custody.
• Human Rights First is a national organization with roots in Houston that needs help from lawyers too.
• Kids in Need of Defense works to ensure that kids do not appear in immigration court without representation, and to lobby for policies that advocate for children’s legal interests. Donate here.
• The Legal Aid Justice Center is a Virginia-based center providing unaccompanied minors legal services and representation.
• Pueblo Sin Fronteras is an organization that provides humanitarian aid and shelter to migrants on their way to the U.S.
• RAICES is the largest immigration nonprofit in Texas offering free and low-cost legal services to immigrant children and families. Donate here and sign up as a volunteer here.
• The Texas Civil Rights Project is seeking “volunteers who speak Spanish, Mam, Q’eqchi’ or K’iche’ and have paralegal or legal assistant experience.”
• Together Rising is another Virginia-based organization that’s helping provide legal assistance for 60 migrant children who were separated from their parents and are currently detained in Arizona.
• The Urban Justice Center’s Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project is working to keep families together.
• Women’s Refugee Commission advocates for the rights and protection of women, children, and youth fleeing violence and persecution.
• Finally, ActBlue has aggregated many of these groups under a single button.
This list isn’t comprehensive, so let us know what else is happening. And please call your elected officials, stay tuned for demonstrations, hug your children, and be grateful if you are not currently dependent on the basic humanity of U.S. policy.
Update, June 17, 2018: Thanks to readers who updated us with more organizations fighting this policy. Other good work is being done by the following:
• CLINIC’s Defending Vulnerable Populations project offers case assistance to hundreds of smaller organizations all over the country that do direct services for migrant families and children.
• American Immigrant Representation Project (AIRP), which works to secure legal representation for immigrants.
• CASA in Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and Pennsylvania. They litigate, advocate, and help with representation of minors needing legal services.
• Freedom for Immigrants (Formerly CIVIC), which has been a leading voice opposing immigrant detention.
• The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center represents all of the immigrant kids placed by the government in foster care in Michigan (one of the biggest foster care placement states). About two-thirds are their current clients are separation cases, and they work to find parents and figure out next steps.
• The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project is doing work defending and advancing the rights of immigrants through direct legal services, systemic advocacy, and community education.
• Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights works for the rights of children in immigration proceedings.
• The Women’s Refugee Commission has aggregated five actions everyone can take that go beyond donating funds.
• And finally, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP)—which organizes law students and lawyers to develop and enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons—just filed suit challenging the cancellation of the Central American Minors program.

Hope you saw Jeff Sessions talking about the raison d'etre of that policy: to spread the news that this admin is going to make it unutterably painful to even think of asking for asylum. He said it with a twinkle in his eyes and a little smile of glee.
Then he quoted the Bible to justify this behavior.
As I am sure you know by now, he and Sarah Hucks are not the only ones who can play that game, because there is a whole lotta Scripture exhorting Jews and later on Christians to be merciful to "the strangers within your gates" and to treat others as you would be treated yourselves.

Those three are sadists, the real deal, the kind who get a pleasurable jolt from inflicting pain...
Trump does it with a bully's swagger. Sessions does it with a sweet smile and a twinkle in his eye. Miller -- gah.
They should horrify anyone with a soul.
To your point, you can find almost anything in the Bible, especially if you cherrypick with ill intent, take out of context, and so on.
Sessions did that by quoting Paul: In the context of his time, Paul was trying to make missionary inroads into the Roman Empire, and was trying to not make unnecessary waves if possible. Converts were being thrown into prison, tortured, killed, so you can see his point.
On the other hand, Saul of Tarsus, later called Paul, never actually met Jesus. A lot of what was later considered foundational to the Church was Paul's interpretation rather than the parables of the wandering rabbi. Parables need to be unpacked, in any case, but you have to look at who is doing the unpacking.
Part of the problem with that particular passage is the way it has been used over the centuries to justify oppression and slavery. How fitting that a Son of the Old South should dredge it up just now.
Jesus: Tie a millstone around your neck Trump, Sessions, & Miller and jump into the sea...
Jesus' teaching is quoted in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and runs like this:
"...but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."
A lot of good quotes have been dredged up this past week, but I hadn't seen this one yet.

There is no such law. They lie to blame this on Obama and the Dems. They say it is "Biblical"...
...which is also a lie. The Bible has much to say about treating "the stranger within your gates" as one of your own, "for we were ourselves strangers in Egypt."
People who show up seeking asylum do not sneak across the border, they present themselves at the border in broad daylight. There are international laws and US laws addressing this. It is a lie to say otherwise.
The sole purpose of the current behavior by the US authorities is to terrorize people into not even attempting to seek asylum for any reason whatsoever. It is terrorist behavior by agents if the US government in our names.

I've had many fights here about that and about the quality of her reporting. Just watch this hour. All of it.
I don't know what people want her to do, or how they want her to present it. Maybe they want her to speak in a nice baritone instead of a light soprano. I don't care. Just stop carrying water for the "fake news" brigade.
I am clearly distraught about today's news: the small children in prison, the IG Report, the exoneration of Comey for having Clinton Derangement Syndrome, the truth about the timeline at the end of the campaign in 2016, Trumptrumptrump.
But this hour Katy brought The News. She looked at the camera and told Truth to Power. Now she's handing it off to Ali Velshi with a smile and a giggle. Don't like it? Tough. As for me, I have to turn off the tv machine and just walk away for awhile.

I address this especially to those who keep saying she is a fan of Trump? What part of Trump "slobbering" all over Kim do you not get?
Before falling for bs false equivalency, realize in this country we can still take to the streets...
...without tanks and machine guns mowing us down (Tien An Men Square). We can read the newspaper of our choice, write to the editor, start a paper of our own. We can blog, we can join a discussion board. We can work to persuade others who,do not agree with us. Shall I go on?
We can resist the forces of evil.
After Bush-Cheney we elected Barack Obama, not a mythical savior but a chance to get it right. After Obama, we in fact elected Hillary Clinton -- another chance to get it right.
But Hillary was taken down in an act of war, and the hateful forces of backlash are wearing red hats and thumping their chests.
We are in terrible trouble. But we are not done yet. Tell the truth about our flaws as a nation, by all means, but don't peddle false equivalency. Resist.
