Listening to a group of new voters talk about the Presidential election in a different language

Our community has a number of new Americans who have now been here long enough to get Citizenship. Many are voting for the first time. Their community organized a forum for new voters today, and invited many candidates to talk. I was there to look up voting places for people who needed that information (not many did. They were pumped to vote.)

The most interesting presentation was listening to one woman speak. Although most of the people at the forum spoke English, sometimes they used their native language because it was easier and faster for them. Sometimes there was an English translation, sometimes not. This time there was no English translation. The following are the words I understood:

"Mitt Romney" "Obama" "1 %" "99 %" "47%"

These new voters may be "English as a Second Language" speakers, but they are clearly high information voters.

That was it. Some of the above were said several times.

There were more than 250 people in that room. They were there for 2 and one-half hours listening to presentations and asking questions. It was amazing.

when I don't forget where I was when it happened

Kennedy shot--In 2nd grade in line for the bathroom
MLK shot--At home watching TV
9/11--Getting ready for work, with TV on in the background
Paul Wellstone Dies--At home from work for lunch
Barack Obama elected President--In a bar, getting hugs from strangers, crying

I will also never forget the campaign:

Knocking on the door of an African-American here in Central Minnesota and hearing her exclaim "She's here about Barack Obama!!!!!"

Knocking on the door of an elderly white woman who said, "Some people say he will just be for the blacks." I responded, "Did you know he was raised by his white grandparents. She looks surprised and said, "You know I have a grandson who is part black and part white." I asked, "Do you think he would just be for the whites or for the blacks." She smiled, took the literature and said, "No I do not!"

Knocking on the door of an elderly woman, who invited me into my house and told me her son had died this year. Then her husband walked in, looking suspicious, but then relaxed when I explained I was there to ask for their vote for Barack Obama. He said, "Well I have voted Republican." The wife looked horrified and said, "You voted REPUBLICAN!!!!" With a twinkle in his eye, he said, "Oh you knew I voted for Eisenhower before I married you!"

Calling a woman on the day before election day to remind her to vote and hearing her say, "I am so glad you called, I was hoping someone would call. My husband won't talk to me anymore about Barack Obama and I needed to talk to someone about how much I want him to win."

I don't think I will be able to bear it if he were to lose. I will be door knocking this week end.

(a true story with a laugh) My SIL said, "Is that true that Romney wanted to get rid of FEMA?"

My brother's response,
