Fairness Should Mean Punishment For Michigan State Student Who Falsely Alleged Hate Crime

By Brian Wheeler | bwheele1@mlive.com

EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University's reputation was dirtied twice in late August by students with wild — and from what authorities say, false — tales. Brandon Carmack said he was beaten by student athletes. Now, he faces criminal charges, accused of filing a false report, stalking an ex-girlfriend and instigating a fight.

Carmack will face consequences if found guilty in court. Not Zachary Tennen.

The 19-year-old told an even more amazing tale. Tennen, who is Jewish, said students assaulted him, stapled his mouth and said they belonged to the Ku Klux Klan, "making Nazi and Hitler symbols."

Not true. Not remotely true. Tennen fabricated every element of his story that suggested a hate crime. He was punched, but because of alleged lewd behavior at a party.

Jetblue: Free Flights For Disgruntled Voters

NEW YORK (AP) — In a marketing gimmick that piggybacks on next month's presidential election, JetBlue is offering a way for Americans to make good on threats to leave the country if "the other guy" wins.

The New York airline said Wednesday that it will give away 2012 seats, or 1,006 round-trip flights, for customers that come out on the losing end of the battle between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Travelers who visit jetblue.com/electionprotection and pick their choice for President will be entered into the contest to win a (temporary) escape outside the U.S. JetBlue's international routes include Mexico and the Caribbean.

Auto Rebound Steers U.S. Economy Back From Lehman Debacle

By Keith Naughton and Craig Trudell - Oct 3, 2012 6:15 AM ET

The housing market is still on shaky ground. Unemployment remains above 8 percent. The one flank of the U.S. economy that’s marching steadily back is the sector that once seemed the weakest: Automotive.

The auto industry in September reached an important milestone that few other sectors can claim. Carmakers sold cars and light trucks at an annualized rate of 14.9 million, taking into account seasonal adjustments, according to researcher Autodata Corp. That’s the best pace since March 2008, before the failure of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

Consumers weary of driving 11-year-old vehicles with poor mileage are increasingly trading in their jalopies for new, fuel-efficient models. Small car sales climbed 50 percent last month as gasoline prices held above $3.75 a gallon. Even pickup sales, linked to the nascent housing industry, are up this year.

“Autos are the bright, shining star in the economy,” Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said in a telephone interview. “It’s a key cog in the economic wheel. If we didn’t have the automotive recovery, the overall economic recovery would be much weaker.”

Voter Purge Over Citizen Status Sours Floridians on Republicans

Florida residents erroneously subjected to a Republican-led effort to purge noncitizens from voter rolls said they’re furious, and several promised to vote against the party’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, as a result.

In interviews with 35 of the 2,625 people the state moved to prevent from voting, all but two said they’re U.S. citizens, with about a third identifying themselves as Republicans and another third as Democrats. They included a Cuba-born physician, a U.S. Army soldier who served in Afghanistan, an entomologist originally from Canada and a taxi driver from Haiti.

The attempt to remove potential noncitizens, led by Republican Governor Rick Scott, may hurt his party in the November presidential election by alienating voters being courted heavily by Romney and President Barack Obama, a Democrat. Three of the past five presidential elections in Florida have been decided by less than 3 percentage points. The state has the most electoral votes of those viewed as competitive by both campaigns.

Among those targeted was Rolando Baster, 60, of Miami, an ear, nose and throat doctor originally from Cuba who said he has been a U.S. citizen for a decade and has always supported Republican candidates. This year, he said, he plans to vote for Obama because of the “trouble” he was caused by Scott’s administration.

Chrysler Posts Strongest September Sales Since 2007; Ford Remains Flat

Source: http://www.valuewalk.com/2012/10/chrysler-posts-st

On Tuesday, Chrysler Group LCC reported September sales of 142,041 vehicles, a 12 percent increase over sales in September 2011. The rise in sales was spread across the company’s portfolio of brands, with Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Truck, and Fiat all seeing increases in their sales, as compared to last year, a spokesman for Chrysler said. The 12 percent rise makes this the best September for the auto manufacturer since September 2007, and provided further indication that the automotive market is returning, in the wake of the 2008 economic meltdown.

A spokesman for the company attributed the increase in sales not only to the continued economic recovery, but also to favorable interest rates, and growing consumer confidence in Chrysler’s vehicles.

“Going forward with our current product lineup, record-low interest rates and a stable U.S. economy, we remain optimistic about the health of the U.S. new vehicle sales industry and our position in it,” Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales for Chrysler, said in a statement.

Part of the increase in September sales is attributable to the strong demand for Chrysler’s reintroduced Dodge Dart, which debuted earlier in 2012. The company moved 5,235 Darts off its lots in September, a full 72 percent better than in August, just a month prior.

The Fiat brand had a landmark month as well. The Italian automaker, which is affiliated with Chrysler, sold 4,176 vehicles in September, the most it has ever moved in one month within the U.S.

Netanyahu Bomb Joins Castro Chickens in UN Theater of Absurd

By Flavia Krause-Jackson

The annual United Nations General Assembly in New York has long been a magnet for world leaders great and small, so it’s hosted some performances that are memorable more for entertainment value than for their import.

The session that just concluded is no exception, having featured reggae lyrics, a lamentation about the loss of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi and a cartoon bomb.

The most memorable moment was Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu producing a drawing of a bomb with a lighted fuse to illustrate the danger of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. “How much enriched uranium do you need for a bomb? And how close is Iran to getting it?” he asked. “Well, let me show you.”

“Netanyahu and his cartoon bomb saved this General Assembly from being a dramatic dud,” said Richard Gowan, associate director for crisis diplomacy and peace operations at New York University’s Center on International Cooperation. “Everyone secretly still misses Qaddafi at the UN: He just took crazy to another level.”

Gunter Grass Hails Israeli Nuclear Whistleblower In New Poem

By Agence France-Presse
Sunday, September 30, 2012 16:22 EDT

Nobel prize-winning German author Gunter Grass, declared persona non-grata by Israel over a poem saying it threatened world peace, has published another work critical of the Jewish state.

In one of a collection of 87 new pieces, Grass hails whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, who served 18 years in jail for leaking Israeli nuclear secrets to a British newspaper, in a poem entitled “A Hero in Our Time”.

He describes former nuclear technician Vanunu as a “hero” and a “role model”, according to extracts published by the German news agency DPA.

Earlier this year, Grass, 84, angered Israel after publishing a piece entitled “What Must Be Said”, in which he voiced fears that a nuclear-armed Israel “could wipe out the Iranian people” with a “first strike.”
