Chrysler Group today reported strong May sales results, with overall sales volume rising 30 percent year-over-year to 150,041 units. Those are the companys best May sales figures since 2007, and the 26th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains for Chrysler. Every single one of Chrysler Groups brands saw its volumes increase compared to May 2011.
Chrysler 29,674 sales, up 81 percent
Chrysler was the brand with the second-biggest sales increase, at 81 percent, and the biggest winner within the brand was the 300 luxury sedan. Sales jumped 140 percent compared to May 2011, to 6101 cars. The 200 midsize sedan saw its sales jump 87 percent to 13,250 cars, while the Town & Country minivan enjoyed a 56-percent sales leap to 10,323 units.
Jeep 44,198 sales, up 24 percent
Continuing demand for the rough-and-tumble Wrangler helped propel the Jeep brand to a 24-percent sales gain. It was up 44 percent to 14,454 monthly sales. The Jeep Grand Cherokee enjoyed a 40-percent sales gain to 13,274 units, and the Jeep Patriot saw sales inch up eight percent to 5891 units. The only model for which sales declined year-over-year was the Compass, down 18 percent to 3720. As we reported this week, Chrysler plans to kill off this version of the Compass by 2014.

Manufacturing in U.S. Expanded at a Slower Pace in May
By Lorraine Woellert - 2012-06-01T14:32:58Z
Manufacturing in the U.S. grew at a slower pace in May as factories tempered production and pared inventories in response to weakness in the global economy.
The Institute for Supply Managements factory index fell to 53.5 after reaching a 10-month high of 54.8 in April, the Tempe, Arizona-based group reported today. Readings greater than 50 signal growth. The median projection of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for a decrease to 53.8 in May.
Manufacturing, which has been a bright spot since the economic expansion began three years ago, may be starting to cool. While gains in auto sales are underpinning factory growth, the industry may become strained by stagnation in Europes economy, U.S. fiscal concerns and less corporate investment.
This signals continued moderate economic growth, not any sort of boom or bust, Michael Brown, an economist at Wells Fargo & Co. in Charlotte, North Carolina, said before the report. You have the uncertainty in Europe, uncertainty around U.S. fiscal policy and the federal budget for next year.

Us Envoy Slams 'Reprehensible' Russia Arms Sales To Syria
Source: Agence France-Presse
UNITED NATIONS US envoy Susan Rice on Thursday condemned "reprehensible" Russian arms deliveries to Syria as she stepped up US calls for increased international pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.
The US ambassador to the United Nations also accused the Damascus government of a "blatant lie" by denying it was involved in a massacre in which 108 people were killed.
A Russian ship carrying arms arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus on May 26, according to the Human Rights First group.
The ship, the Professor Katsman, apparently turned off its transponder on May 26 in the vicinity of Tartus, Sadia Hameed of Human Rights First told AFP. The vessel had been tracked from Piraeus in Greece.
