Pro-Euro Party Projected To Win Greek Election

Source: LA Times

From the Associated Press

June 17, 2012, 1:20 p.m.
The New Democracy party came in first in Greece's election Sunday and immediately proposed forming a pro-euro coalition government -- a development that eased, at least briefly, deep fears that the vote would unleash an economic tsunami.

Sunday's vote was seen as crucial for Europe and the world, since it could determine whether Greece was forced to leave the joint euro currency, a move that could have potentially catastrophic consequences for other ailing European nations and the global economy. As central banks stood ready to intervene in case of financial turmoil, Greece held its second national election in six weeks after an inconclusive ballot on May 6.

With 37.4 percent of the vote counted, official results showed the conservative New Democracy with 30.5 percent of the vote, ahead of the radical anti-bailout Syriza party's 26 percent and the pro-bailout Socialist PASOK with 12.9 percent.

Although official projections late Sunday showed that no party will win enough seats in the 300-member parliament to form a government on its own, Greece's two traditional parties -- New Democracy and PASOK -- will have enough seats to form a coalition together.

Romney Says His Policies On Israel Will Be ‘Opposite’ Of Obama’s

By Meghashyam Mali - 06/17/12 12:20 PM ET

Mitt Romney on Saturday promised social conservative voters that his approach towards Israel would be the "opposite" of Obama administration's policies.

Asked how he would "strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship," during a video address to attendees of the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, Romney said he would "just look at the things the president has done and do the opposite," reports said.

Romney also said he would be "leading in Syria by encouraging our friends there like the Turks and the Saudis to provide weapons to the insurgents."

Romney has been a strong advocate of arming opposition forces seeking the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but such moves have been rejected by the Obama administration.

McCain: Lack Of US Aid To Syrian Rebels 'Shameful'

Source: Associated Press

(06-17) 07:14 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Sen. John McCain says the lack of U.S. aid to Syrian rebels is "shameful," and that helping the opposition would be the biggest blow to Iran in 25 years.

The United States has refused to arm Syrian rebels in part to avoid a proxy fight with Iran and Russia, which back the Syrian government. The crisis in Syria is likely to come up when President Barack Obama meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Mexico on Monday.

'NYPD Blue' Writer Pummels Poodle To Death: Cops

It was hardly a fair fight.

A 230-pound, washed-up TV screenwriter took out his anger on his 4 1/2-pound poodle — punching the pooch in the face so hard that it died from a brain injury, police said yesterday.

Ted Shuttleworth, 51 — who had a brief stint writing for “NYPD Blue” — was arrested yesterday morning at his home in Sunnyside, Queens.

Sources said Shuttleworth, who has worked for Steven Spielberg and now reads scripts for $300 a pop, allegedly decked little Lola on May 29 because he was angry at the pup.

He took the 5-year-old dog to a veterinarian, where her death raised suspicions. The hospital called the ASPCA, which took Lola’s remains for a necropsy.

Ahmadinejad: I’m Gone After 2013

By Arturo Garcia
Saturday, June 16, 2012 21:23 EDT

A German magazine is reporting that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is ready to leave politics for good.

According to The Times of Israel, Ahmadinejad told Allgemeine Zeitung Saturday that once his current term expires next year, the former mayor of Tehran and civil engineer plans to return to academia.

“Eight years is enough,” he said. “Maybe I’ll get involved politically at the university, but I’m not going to found any political party or group.”

This coming week, Iran will begin discussions regarding the country’s nuclear program with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Michigan Protesters: You Can’t Say It? Don’t Legislate It!

During a so-called SlutWalk in Detroit on Saturday, protesters mocked the Michigan legislature for silencing a female representative who said the word “vagina” while debating bills that would restrict reproductive rights.

“If you can’t say it, don’t legislate it,” hundreds of protesters shouted as they marched down the street.

On Wednesday, State Rep. Lisa Brown (D) took to the House floor to protest Michigan’s new, draconian anti-abortion law. “I have not asked you to adopt and adhere to my religious beliefs,” she said. “Why are you asking me to adopt yours? And finally, Mr. Speaker, I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in my vagina, but no means no.”

The mostly male Republican caucus banned Brown and another Democratic legislator, Rep. Barb Byrum (D) from speaking on the House floor.

US Believes Russia Has Ship With Weapons, Troops En Route To Syria

By Barbara Starr, with reporting from Jill Dougherty

The United States says it is tracking a Russian military cargo ship as it makes its way to Syria carrying weapons, ammunition and a small number of Russian troops.

U.S. intelligence believes the Russians are sending the ship to help fortify its naval base in Syria as the situation in country continues to spiral out of control, Pentagon officials told CNN Friday.

The presence of the ship was first reporting by NBC News.

Classified U.S. imagery shows the ship, called the Nikolay Filchenkov, began loading in the port of Sevastapol on the Black Sea on June 7 and is headed for the Syrian port of Tartus, where the Russians have a naval facility. The port is vital for Russian naval access to the entire Middle East.

Iraq And Iran Form Alliance Within OPEC

Source: Financial Times

Iran and Iraq are forming a strengthening alliance inside Opec, raising concerns among moderate Arab Gulf producers like Saudi Arabia and increasing the potential for discord in the oil producers’ group.

With the EU sovereign debt crisis worsening and growing fears for the global economy, the deep divisions within Opec risk undermining the organisation’s ability to do its job of effectively managing oil supply and preventing violent price swings.

A person familiar with the matter said Opec’s meeting in Vienna on Thursday was overshadowed by “strong disagreements” over issues ranging from the acceptable price of oil, to the global supply-demand balance, to who should replace the current secretary general of the organisation.

A particular bone of contention was a proposal by Venezuela – backed by other Opec hardliners like Iran, Iraq and Algeria – that the group should protest against the EU sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear programme. The move was rebuffed by Saudi Arabia and other moderates including Nigeria, Libya and Kuwait, who argued that such protests were the preserve of foreign ministers, not oil ministers.

U.S. Consumer Sentiment Gauge Declines to a Six-Month Low

By Lorraine Woellert - 2012-06-15T14:13:50Z

Confidence among U.S. consumers declined in June to the lowest level this year as the labor market showed few signs of improving.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment fell in June to 74.1 from 79.3 the prior month, which was the highest since October 2007. The gauge was projected to fall to 77.5, according to a median forecast of 66 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

A pace of job growth that’s slowed for four straight months and wage gains that are failing to keep pace with inflation are offsetting cheaper prices at the gas pump. At the same time, households may be feeling less wealthy as Europe’s debt crisis roils share prices, raising the risk that consumer spending will stagnate.

“I’m not so sure how much the average American is in tune with what is exactly occurring in Europe,” Russell Price, senior economist at Ameriprise Financial Inc. in Detroit, said before today’s report. “But it is at the front of their minds, because they’re seeing stock values decline and they’re seeing job growth decline and that’s worrisome.”
