Who’s Creating ‘Daylight’ Now? Jewish Dems Ask Netanyahu

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- In the U.S.-Israel relationship, "daylight" is back, but this time it’s Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is being called on to draw down the shades.

Netanyahu’s recent sharp rebuke of the Obama administration’s Iran policies has drawn equally pointed pushback from Jewish Democrats.

The back and forth recalls tensions in the first year of both governments -- but then it was President Obama who was largely bearing the brunt of accusations of allowing for daylight between the two allies, at that time because of differences over how to deal with the Palestinians.

One element is a constant: Then, as now, the pro-Israel community is in the middle pleading for a little quiet.

Iran Unveils Long-Range Surveillance Drone

--CLIP

On Tuesday, Hajizadeh described the new drone as a key strategic additional to Iran's military capabilities with the ability to carry out reconnaissance missions or be armed with "bombs and missiles."

Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, said the Shahed-129, or Witness-129, has a range of 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles). That covers much of the Middle East including Israel and nearly doubles the range of previous drones produced by Iranian technicians, who have often relied on reverse engineering military hardware with the country under Western embargoes.

But it's unclear whether the new drone contains any elements of an unmanned CIA aircraft that went down in eastern Iran in December. Iran said it has recovered data from the RQ-170 Sentinel and claimed it was building its own replica.

Iran frequently makes announcements about its strides in military technology, but it is virtually impossible to independently determine the actual capabilities or combat worthiness of the weapons Iran is producing.

Obama: Benghazi Attack More Than A ‘Mob’ Action

By Agence France-Presse
Monday, September 24, 2012 22:02 EDT

NEW YORK — US President Barack Obama said Monday that the attack on the US consulate in Libya’s Benghazi was clearly more than a “mob action,” amid lingering dispute about the nature of the assault.

Obama also said in an appearance on the ABC talk show “The View” that the best way to deal with a film deemed offensive to Muslims like the one which sparked anti-US fury in the Middle East was to ignore it.

“There’s no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn’t just a mob action,” Obama said of the Benghazi attack two weeks ago which killed US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

The White House said for the first time last week that the attack was terrorism, under heavy political pressure from Republicans.

President Obama Suggests Romney Wants to Take U.S. to War Over Iran

Source: Bloomberg

President Barack Obama called on Mitt Romney to clarify his position on Iran and Syria, raising the prospect that his Republican presidential challenger might want to start another war in the Middle East.

“If Governor Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so,” Obama said in an interview for CBS’s “60 Minutes” program broadcast yesterday as world leaders, including Obama, prepare to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York today.

“I’ve executed on my foreign policy,” Obama said, citing accomplishments in Iraq and in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, according to a transcript released by the network.

In a session taped separately for the show, Romney said his threshold for committing combat troops for any conflict was a “high hurdle.” The former Massachusetts governor criticized Obama for not scheduling a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week and said he would demand greater accountability from the new leadership in Egypt.

Egypt's President Wants More Independence From US

Source: Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) -- On the eve of his first visit to the United States as Egypt's president, Islamist Mohammed Morsi said he will demonstrate more independence from the U.S. in decision-making than his predecessor Hosni Mubarak and told Washington not to expect Egypt to live by its rules.

Morsi sent that message in an interview with the New York Times after a wave of violence erupted across the Muslim world over an amateur film produced in the U.S. that was deemed offensive to Islam and its prophet Muhammed. The film raised news tensions between Washington and Egypt.

Morsi criticized U.S. dealings with the Arab world, saying it is not possible to judge Egyptian behavior and decision-making by American cultural standards. He said Washington earned ill will in the region in the past by backing dictators and taking "a very clear" biased approach against the Palestinians and for Israel.

"Successive American administrations essentially purchased with American taxpayer money the dislike, if not the hatred, of the peoples of the region," he told the paper in the interview published late Saturday, drawing a clear distinction between the American government and the American people. Those administrations "have taken a very clear biased approach against something that (has) very strong emotional ties to the people of the region that is the issue of Palestine."

Study: ‘Apartheid’ School Segregation Deepening In California, Texas And New York

A full 15 percent of African American students and 14 percent of Latino students are attending America’s “apartheid” schools, which have student bodies that are less than 1 percent white, according to a new study by the Civil Rights Project published on Wednesday.

Additionally, the typical African American or Latino student attends school with twice the share of low-income students as their white or Asian peers. These segregation factors are most exacerbated in California, Texas and New York, “states that have been profoundly altered by immigration trends over the last half century.”

“We underscore the fact that simply sitting next to a white student does not guarantee better educational outcomes for students of color,” the report said. “Instead, the resources that are consistently linked to predominately white and/or wealthy schools help foster real and serious educational advantages over minority segregated settings.”

“Our political and educational leaders, who have passively accepted deepening school segregation, need to find some of the same courage that transformed our society in the mid-twentieth century,” the report continued.

Israel's Future if it Continues on its Present Course: Worldwide Boycott, Isolation and Castigation

When was the last time that you didn't read or hear that Israel was threatening to attack Iran and its nuclear facilities, and that it was trying to involve the U.S. government? By now, the entire world is sick and tired of listening to Israel's ultra aggressive Prime Minister, Bibi Netanyahu, beating the drums of war. The nations of the world have witnessed the behavior and actions of Israel for many decades and the majority of them now find it to be completely unacceptable.

And, because a great many of these nations believe that the unjustified and highly aggressive actions of the Israeli government against the people of Palestine and its neighbors in the Middle East are getting out of control, a movement to initiate boycotts, divestments and sanctions against Israel is well underway and is growing in scope and intensity.

There is no way of knowing just how extensive this movement to censure Israel is but with each passing day there are more nations and entities within these nations that are making it known that they are in total disagreement with Israel's hubristic agenda. The government of Israel has shown that it is out of touch with the world and is totally unable to carry on normal relations with nations and people of different ideologies and beliefs.

The world community was horrified by the Israeli siege of the city of Gaza that began on December 27, 2008 and the violent actions its commandos took against the Freedom Flotilla ships that attempted to deliver humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza in 2010. Now the world listens to Mr. Netanyahu's endless tirades against Iran as he readies an attack on that nation's nuclear facilities that he insists are in the process of creating nuclear weapons. He totally dismisses the conclusions of the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Association) and U.S. intelligence agencies that do not agree with his assessment.

New Ad Implies Obama Is Cozy With Muslim Brotherhood

The conservative advocacy group Let Freedom Ring released an ad Thursday to run in key swing states depicting President Barack Obama as a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer.

The group was planning on airing the ads next month, but shifted course after Muslims attacked the Egyptian embassy and killed four Americans in Libya, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood, considered a terrorist organization by some. The Brotherhood denies such claims.

Let Freedom Ring President Colin Hanna says Obama's response to the incidents illustrated his naïvete´ on foreign affairs.

"After our embassies were stormed, President Obama's administration offered apologies while the Muslim Brotherhood stood by as we were attacked," Hanna says. "Instead of confronting our enemies such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Obama kowtows to them."

Mobs Targeting U.S. Missions Torch Banks, Cinemas Across Pakistan

By Haris Anwar and Khurrum Anis - Sep 21, 2012 7:41 AM ET

Pakistanis protesting an anti-Islam film made in the U.S. poured onto the streets in major cities, clashing with police in attempts to reach American diplomatic missions and ignoring appeals for calm from the prime minister.

Five people were killed 112 were injured in Karachi where mobs set fire to five movie theaters, banks and fast food outlets. Protesters also ransacked the chamber of commerce, shops and cinema houses in Peshawar where six people were killed and 40 wounded. Police were able to keep thousands of angry protesters away from highly protected U.S. missions in clashes that started soon after the Friday prayer.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf had urged peaceful protests against the amateur movie that has sparked demonstrations across the Muslim world in the last 10 days. The government shut mobile-phone services in major cities and deployed police and paramilitary troops to quell the violence.

“Extremist elements have taken hostage our concept of a national holiday to register our peaceful protest,” Ashraf said at a conference in Islamabad today. “Attacking foreign missions is against Islam. I appeal to everyone to register your protest without damage to life and property.”
