While striving to escape the shackles of nature, humankind has been altering methodically, and increasingly, the conditions on which life depends.
Fiddling with nature wasn’t always a problem when there was plenty of it to squander. Further evidence emerged during 2020 suggesting that’s no longer the case.
• Just this year human constructions attained the mass of all living organisms on the planet, reported a team of scientists from Israel in the journal Nature. Meanwhile, their report said, human construction continues to grow and living mass, such as forests, wildlife, insects and fish, to shrink. Bacteria and fungi seem to be holding their own.
• Microplastic fibers were found near the top of Mount Everest. Mercury was discovered to be contaminating life at the deepest depths of the oceans.
• Although a pandemic caused carbon emissions to fall in 2020 by 7 percent, a record for a single year, carbon in the atmosphere continued to increase to record levels. Greenhouse gases that had been previously frozen melted and filtered into the atmosphere.
• Wildfires in Siberia released an unprecedented amount of carbon. The cause of coral reef bleaching off the Florida coast was assigned “98 percent” to ocean warming.
• Glyphosate, a keystone ingredient in modern crop production, is likely to harm or kill 93 percent of the plants and animals under Endangered Species Act protection, the government reported. The Trump administration altered the rules for endangered species listing, adding economic impacts to scientific findings as a determiner of which life forms deserve protection.
• Deep ocean temperatures were rising quicker than previously thought, and heated surface water abetted the frequency and fury of hurricanes, heat waves, droughts, wildfires and other weather anomalies. Temperatures reached a never-recorded 100 degrees in parts of Siberia, and for a time in autumn the readings across the entire Arctic averaged 12 degrees above norms.
• Arctic sea ice shrank to the second-lowest extent since records began, scientists said. The 14 lowest minimum Arctic sea ice extents have all been recorded in the past 14 years. No September was hotter worldwide. Globally, 2020 tied 2016 for the warmest year on record.
